This book was hard to read because it’s based on a true story and these things continue to happen to countless people. It’s much easier to try to live in ignorant bliss, but Mottley did a fantastic job compelling you to pay attention. I don’t think I’ll recover from this. 

The writing is lovely and you end up way too attached to the characters so it’s just hurts extra. 

Also the queer representation was very well done.

But wait, it gets worse!! It was truly devastating to read how many awful things happened to this poor girl.  The writing was beautiful, I was surprised to see the author was so young! But basically every trigger warning there is applies here

I definitely bawled my eyes out and as I’m writing this, my eyes are in fact not dry. I loved the way Mottley was able to express the rawness of these terrible situations. I really enjoyed the exploration of the bonds that Kiara had with people, my favourite was her relationship with Trevor. The emotions- top tier. At the same time, the pacing was a bit off for me so I couldn’t really get into the book properly. The last leg of the book made this a 4 star so read and cry at your risk

I gave all my thoughts on this one in the sapphlit zoom chat. Four stars because it wasn’t something I could thoroughly “enjoy” because of how traumatizing and dark and visceral it was. Fuck the police. Fuck all the men who placed their dreams on the shoulders of a little girl and then BLAMED HER for turning to sex work to support and uplift said dreams. That girl never did and never will get justice. And she is just one of tens of thousands of real life girls in the same situation. God. This author is incredible. And wrote it so young. Cant wait to see what else she does.
