Since I loved Good Calories, Bad Calories I knew I'd like this book. I wasn't disappointed. While I find that Keto can be confusing to follow (Atkins is simpler) I do agree that its health benefits are nothing short of phenomenal. Long-term studies of Keto for everything from autoimmune to epilepsy are showing its advantages.
Taubes is a great writer of health and medical information; he keeps technical facts fascinating. He gives you all the information you need to know and all that you *want* to know as well.

Although not a scientist, Gary Taubes cites/quotes/mentions a significant amount of doctors, scientists, nutritionists, researchers and most importantly general public that have experienced the benefits of keto/low carb diet first hand (not just for weight loss, but improvements in other health markers as well).
I am sure there are always two sides to all things, and any claim/theory can be challenged on the basis of contradictory material. However, the content of the book and the logic behind how things work with and without the keto diet definitely align with what I personally have experienced when I tried the low carb way of life and when I was away from the lifestyle for brief periods.
I would certainly recommend anyone to give this book a read, as also explore some additional material such as the DietDoctor website and maybe give this way a try, especially if you have chronic health issues including but not limited to diabetes, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, obesity, etc.

Gary Taubes is a strong proponent of low carb and keto eating, however in general his books are hard going due to all the scientific references he includes. His first book was a large tome of scientific references, and his books since then have appeared to be an attempt to make the information available to the lay audience. This book is his best effort yet in that direction. He also includes a few chapters at the end going over specific foods to eat (however this is not the book for you if you are looking for a detailed plan!).

I enjoyed this book for what it is, an educational book backed by scientific research explaining what keto is, how it works in aid to weight loss and the history behind it. By no means is this a fun, quick read but it’s full of information that I think is important to anyone wanting to embark on the ketogenic diet. Thank you Netgalley for my ARC of this book!

What I appreciate most about this book, a summary of much of the thinking about keto diets, is rigorously researched. Taubes is not only on top of the scientific literature, finding the fault lines in even textbooks, but interviews hundreds of experts and practitioners to find meaningful, actionable advice.

Perhaps most importantly, this book provides the needed confidence to start or continue a diet (keto) that is so different from conventional nutritional advice.

Highly recommend.

This is a great starter book for keto. It is essentially written for anyone that just had the “you’re pre-diabetic” convo with the doctor, but it’s also just a bunch of good, honest info in one place. And yep, that includes straightforward info about what we know, what we don’t know, and discussion of the many criticisms of this way of life.

Chapter 13, which is about carb addiction, is something that I think everyone considering cutting carbs needs to read. It’s so spot on.

I do think he should have talked a little bit more about electrolytes. Most would say those are NOT optional, and need to be supplemented daily, not just in the beginning.

Overall, this was an excellent primer for anyone considering a ketogenic diet.

[I received an electronic review copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.]

3 stars = Good/solid/fine

Fascinating, technical read focused on the history of ketogenic eating (low carb/high fat) and reasons why it could be the solution to obesity, diabetes, etc. for those whose bodies don't respond to "eat less, move more" techniques. The best audience for this would be medical professionals, dietitians, etc. This would not be a great resource for a newcomer looking to explore keto for the first time, unless they specifically wanted the scientific and historical background. I did a lot of skimming in the early chapters only because this was more technical at times than I was expecting. That said, I found the final chapters - with more information on what to eat and how and why - engaging and interesting. I learned a lot from this whole resource, even if it was targeted to a different sort of reader.
