So ever since Labrynth came out when I was a kid I have always loved Goblin stories. White stag started this series and this was a phenomenal second part.

What did I like? This is storytelling at its finest. I really enjoyed the mythical beasts and the group of people accompanying Erlking and the Stag on their quest to save the world. The plot just sucked me in as we watch Janneke still struggling with accepting being the Stag, and her relationship with Soren takes a beating.

Would I recommend or buy? Yes... I just love this genre. There isn’t enough books on this so every one is a keeper. I have really enjoyed this series and the peek at the end says book three will be amazing too.

Thoughts for the author? Congratulations on your release! Fantastic five stars❤️❤️❤️

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. Review can also be found on *Milky Way of Books*

I enjoyed the sequel! As I had with White Stag this story is filled with mysteries and action and humor as both Janneke and Soren try to navigate their new positions of power and their growing dread as something far more sinister threatens Permafrost...and the world.

The mix of nordic mythology and the culture of the goblins was fascinating to read and the travels the gang had as they tried to solve the mysteries behind Janneke's dreams and the threat of Ragnarok.

The ending despite its seemingly good resolve gave me a cliffhanger that was very very terrifying!

Goblin King by Kara Barbieri is the 2nd book in the Permafrost series. Goblin King picks up about a year after White Stag ends when Soren becomes the new goblin king and Janneke has become the mythical creature known as "The Stag".
Janneke is still trying to learn about the powers she has inherited from the former Stag as well as still deal with being tormented by the shade of Sorens Uncle Lydian. When it is revealed that Soren and Janneke will be the ones to bring about the end of the world they must go on a quest to retrieve Lydian's soul for assistance and try to stop the end of the world from getting a chance to start.
I really enjoyed this book and I had no idea it was about to come out so I was super excited to get a hold of a copy to read and review.
I think the only issue I had with the story is that ended too quickly! I really didn't think I had read through that much and suddenly the story was over with. Needless to say, that's a personal issue and certainly nothing wrong with the story. I was just greedy and wanted more!
I really enjoyed the development of both Soren and Janneke and the group of friends that accompanied them on their quest and I certainly am looking forward to the last book in the series.

Full review on my blog, Storied Adventures!

I LOVED White Stag. But this one was a bit of a let down.
I loved the adventure and fighting Norse mythological creatures while saving the world. So freaking cool.
BUT there was no chemistry between me and the characters or between the characters themselves. There was no heat between Janneke and Soren this time.

I still can't wait for the next book though!

Good writing, but I still loved the first book more. The story continues at a bit of a slow pace. I hope that the next book will pick up from the first book.

In this sequel, we follow Janneke and Soren as they try to find their footing as the new Erl King and Stag. however, Janneke is plagued by Lydian's spirit, and comes to find out she and Soren are destined to destroy the world.

I still love this world and its connection to Norse mythology. However, I thought there was just so much thrown into this novel. Janneke's growth as the Stag is fantastic, and meeting new characters was exciting. But I would have loved Janneke's connection to the Permafrost and to her powers to have been more fleshed out. By the end of the novel it felt more like a deus ex machina at the end.

The plot surrounding her and Soren being destined to destroy the world kept me hooked. I was so invested in their party breaking that destiny. But again, it felt like it needed to be fleshed out more. There were many Norse mythological beings mentioned, but not much of an explanation about them.

Readers are left on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I am interested on where the story will go.

Overview:
The Hunt is over but the War has just begun.
Against all odds, Janneke has survived the Hunt for the Stag--but all good things come with a cost. Lydian might be dead, but he took the Stag with him. Janneke now holds the mantle, while Soren, now her equal in every way, has become the new Erlking. Janneke's powers as the new Stag has brought along haunting visions of a world thrown into chaos and the ghost of Lydian taunts her with the riddles he spoke of when he was alive.
When Janneke discovers the truth of Lydian and his madness, she's forced to see her tormentor in a different light for the first time. The world they know is dying and Lydian may have been the only person with the key to saving it.

Review: Goblin King picks up a year after the end of [b:White Stag|45892353|White Stag|Kara Barbieri|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1566117134l/45892353._SY75_.jpg|50677972]. Janneke is the Stag; Soren the new Erlking. Their bond and relationship is something that hasn't been seen for many years. As Soren navigates the role as Erlking, Janneke fights with Lydian in her head. She thinks she may be going crazy until she realizes he is the key to saving the world. Janneke is put through challenges as she and her entourage work toward a common goal. The story is well written and has twists and turns throughout. Many references to Norse mythology in the creatures and events that take place. The author also doesn't brush Janneke's pain and PTSD aside in this second book. Yes, Janneke has come a long way in her healing process, but she also has a long way to go as well. Especially now that her torturer could potentially help them save the world.

Recommendation: Yes!

This is a decent sequel but I don’t think I could recommend it to someone who hasn’t read the first book previously. The setting of Permafrost is well thought out and described, but this lacked the spark of story that I felt with White Stag. I definitely will pick up Book 3 when it comes out to see how the story arc continues, but I appreciate that Book 2 ended in a lull in the story.

Thanks to the publisher for providing an ARC through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

I just felt that this sequel fell a bit flat for me. It took me the longest time to get back into the story and it was a bit slow-paced in my opinion. The jump into the adventure part of this book felt flimsy and not much happened. At times I felt like Soren was a sulky teenager and the plot of having Lydian prancing around with not much fight or push back was a bit weird.
Of course, it ended in a cliff hanger, so let's see how the next one goes.
