Mismarketed, thought provoking, uncomfortable
Not sure if any of the featured reviewers quoted on the cover read the same book I did… it’s certainly not an “extremely funny American romance” or “plain funny as hell”

Overall I thought the book was OK. I found the main character, Jess, to be so annoying. It was almost insufferable having her whine every time she got herself into a mess and felt like her boyfriend wasn't "sticking up" for her. The plot was kind of drawn out and slow. That aside, I think that the author did a fairly decent job at capturing the conflicted feelings that WOC may have with interracial dating. Everything's fine was not the best book that I've, but not the worst either.

This book confused me and I’m not entirely sure what message it was trying to send. It was funny and thought provoking at times though.

Tore through this. Ending left me genuinely uneasy for a while given the state of American politics in 2025

The political ideas discussed in this book don't go very deep. But for a Romance book it still was pretty nuanced.
I usually don't read this genre. But I can appreciate that this relationship felt somewhat more mature, definitely not like a prude teenage flirt.
Half way through I got bored as I thought the story would just keep progressing in a stereotypical drama structure of 'enemies to lovers to enemies to happy end' buttheir on/off relationship turned out to be a bit more irregular.
What I liked most were the insides into the characters' office work in finance (thoughthe newspaper job was described quite oddly. So maybe, after all, the fiance world was just as unrealistic?) .

I don't really write reviews, but I decided I wanted to on this book. I read this book because I read about the bashing it got in ratings before it even came out. I don't think that's fair to rate a book you haven't read.
As for the book, I enjoyed it. I felt I could relate to the differing political views of Jess and Josh. . I grew up with a conservative dad. I heard lots of conservative thoughts from him and his family. Some of the comments of the characters in the book remind me of them. My husband grew up with liberal parents. When we got together over 20 years ago, I had more conservative views, and he was more liberal. Over the years, I've become more liberal because I've learned and listened and changed. As for the race aspect, I'm a white woman who's married to a white man. I have no understanding of what it is like to be black, and for that, I choose to just listen to others. I liked Jess because her thoughts helped me hear more ideas. In the end, both Jess and Josh are young. They both chose to love each other. They both chose to take a chance, albeit Jess may be taking a bigger chance. In the end, they decided to try. He may learn things from her, and she may learn things from him. I enjoyed the story cause it felt real. It felt like these were real experiences that people have.
Also the ending has
