Fast paced, I liked the characters. I like how their relationship developed throughout. Just a little bit cheesy. Ultimately, I liked the protagonist, Jess, can relate to her insecurities and being a hypocrite. I liked Josh. I wanted both of them to end up together, I felt the "pure" love. But their problems weren't addressed, the ending was SHOOKENING but also abrupt. I liked the ending but it felt a little out of place. The conflict wasn't addressed which maybe the whole point of the story. But the promotion that this was a political/racial themed love story did not leave up to expectations. There was no blatant point made, no resolution or impact. It was a waste since the buildup to
their penultimate fight
was satisfying but the ending left me disappointed. Nevertheless, I liked the pacing and the writing and the female main character hence it's a thumb

I feel bated by this…
, initially I thought it would not be enjoyable, then by 30% through I really supported this couple! But soon it was made how obvious how annoying the main character is. Being an imperfect hypocrite is fine if explored properly, but both halves of this couple felt like
they made too many compromises and unintelligent decisions for someone of their character. The writing style was a little receptive too.

3.25 or .5 i can’t decide lol

this book has me torn.

for one, idk why it’s marketed as a romance because why it has a relationship it’s not a romance/enemies to lovers situation.

jess and josh… oh boy lol. if you remove the politics, racism, and economic discussions from this they are lowkey a decent couple? but you can’t… lol. the way their relationship is toxic and gaslighty, yet it works well for both of them? it’s clear that there’s some sort of question on how much do we/should we tolerate from the people we love, but i don’t think it was clear what conclusion we’re being pushed towards. personally, i was not a fan of what transpires in the last like 20 pages of the book because it’s not better to be happy than right when this is what we’re talking about??? but the way things were written and set up made what happened make total sense. lowkey it would’ve been strange if it didn’t go that way.

i will say, this does a great job of pointing out the weird nyc white transplant woke culture + finance bro conservative culture. like lmao lowkey yall are 2 sides of the same (rich) coin. (i am a native new yorker thank you very much).

the compartmentalization aspect that came to be important in this was a little disappointing.

one of the best parts of the book was when jess goes home to her dad and meets barbara. the perspective and reflection that happens at that point really gave me hope and then that was killed lol.

this is certainly an interesting book and one that i wanted to like but i can’t say i fully did.
