Published in the US as Jellicoe Road. Winner of the 2009 Printz Award.
Like many of the reviewers here, I was confused by this book for the first 100 pages. I could tell that the seemingly disparate stories of Taylor and her struggle to lead her House during the Territory Wars and the flashback sequences of a tragic car accident on Jellicoe Road, were connected, but it takes time for the stories to merge.
This book contains every taboo subject possible: teen pregnancy, parental neglect, drug abuse, violence, and prostitution. I am not sure that this book is appropriate for any young readers under the age of 16 or so. Having said that, Jellicoe Road is a fantastic book. If you love YA literature because you like to read it yourself, this is a must-read. It is memorable.

Oh my god I finished about 1.5 minutes ago and I am kind of emotionally unstable. I didn't see any of the ending to this book coming and it hooked me from the start. I think the only beef I have with it is that the first half of it was really confusing. But you then hit a point where everything begins making sense and I just had my mind blown. I don't have real words, I'm crying right now.
Update: Now that I can form coherent sentences, I would like to say that this books is beautifully written. I went into it completely blind and even though I spent the first 35% of the book rather confused, I continued to want to read it. The way that Marchetta writes is captivating enough to get you to the point where everything clicks and you fall for the characters and need to know more. I saw no flaws with the plot and the characters were realistic enough to paint pictures in your mind. It felt like you were with them, fighting this war, cracking sarcastic jokes. It was incredible and I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a not so cheesy young adult book.

This is one of my favorites so I reread often. It took me 3-4 sittings to finish this go around and I cried every time. So much heartache but so so so much love.
Wow. This book is just simply stunning. It was a mix of touching, heart breaking, hilarious and just raw emotion. I cannot express how much I loved this piece of writing. In fact, I think this comes close with how much I love Zusak's 'The Book Thief', which, I assure you, I love very, very much.
Marchetta has the ability to make the shortest of passages, of lines that are so powerful that they make you stop whilst reading, take a deep breath, and will yourself to fight back the tears. Some of this prose was just simply beautiful and her depictions of love, and loss, and friendship were so thoughtful and thought-provoking. Let's just say I cried a lot during this book. A. Lot.
The story is quite confusing at first, with it going back and forth from Taylor at Jellicoe in the modern day, and five friends from about 20 years before. It does very much feel like you've walked into a story half way through and you're not quite sure how you got there. However, I just think it makes it all that much more sweet as you get further along in the novel and you find the stories and events intertwine with each other and it's just like a mystery that you get to solve along with the protagonist (or maybe just before, like I did a few times).
I would honestly recommend this book to anyone, no matter what age group they are because although this book is a YA book, it deals with such hard hitting issues in such a mature way that I think anyone can appreciate it's literary merit. Oh, and Jonah Griggs is amazing and fit, I just had to put that out there. Seriously, why hasn't everyone read this?
