Who's the cutest puppy? Is Gimlet the cutest puppy? Yes, you ARE!

All the ear scritches to the most adorably fierce sleuthing sidekick ever. (And she's a smart and loyal service dog, too.) Plus cocktails and a murder mystery IN SPAAAAACE!! What's not to like?

There were a lot of things that had promise, but ultimately I didn’t feel like I knew the main characters meaningfully, just things about them. The lawyer’s dialogue was more than I could deal with, just too silly to be believable,

I read an ARC from the publisher. Very solid. The mystery kept me guessing, the setting was interesting, and the dog was adorable. Narrator was complex and sympathetic, while still someone I probably would find annoying in real life - that I liked her here was impressive. The included cocktail recipes were a fun touch.

I wrote a longer review for the library's blog: https://carnegiestout.org/out-of-this-world-mysteries/

The spaceship makes for an interesting take on a locked room mystery because the entire investigation also is in the "locked room".

What really let this book down for me was the POV character. I found Tesla INSUFFERABLE.  The first third of the book is her constant unpleasant, hostile interactions with the staff of the ship, for a reason yes but it was really really hard to get through.
I liked that we could see her thinking about her actions, how she dealt with PTSD and pain, she's probably a well written character who is decidedly Not For Me.

This book would have been better minus the infinite money and lawyer on speed dial.

Ugh this book was such a slog. For starters, the sci-fi setting felt entirely disposable— this book could’ve taken place on a regular, earthbound cruise ship, and the sci-fi technology was explained so minimally that I still don’t quite know what some of the literal plot devices were. The main cast was insufferable and felt like high snobbery vs. high society; I didn’t feel the glamour. And then the twist— dear lord I guess I didn’t see that coming but also… what? It felt implausible, and the motive thinly developed.

Highlights included Fantine, the main character’s hoot-of-a-lawyer who probably deserves her own book, “the wall of a security guard” aka Bob, and the cocktail recipes that defined the start of every chapter.

Most memorable quote: “when necessary, she could still force her ass to roll in seductive circles with her stride”.

Not my favorite of her books which is unfortunate since I loved the Lady Astronaut series. It was fine, cool mystery, but didn't wow.
