Audiobooks are the best way to go for books set in Scotland! I was very familiar with the television version of this book, which mattered very little as it turned out to be very different. Jimmy Perez, though in quite a different time of life and situation to the television version, is as thoughtful and appealing a character, Sandy Wilson is little changed, and plays a big part, and all the characters are well drawn. The mystery is, as ever, intriguing, the setting atmospheric, and it is accent heaven.

I am enjoying this series more with each one I read -- 5 more to go at this point! This one kept me guessing until the very end. I liked the development of Sandy's character, in particular, on his home island. Some day my wife and I plan to visit these islands!

Middling mystery from the Jimmy Perez/Shetland series. This was not as rewarding as a Vera Stanhope partly bc Perez is a flatter character. The story itself takes a lot of twists without becoming complex, just twisty. Great scenery (the Outer Hebrides) and a community that is trapped in an earlier time period.

I might be done with this series. It's pleasant, and each book is a comfortable read. I like that they are set in Shetland. In this book, we spend a lot of time on Whalsay, a smaller island just east of the Mainland and north of Lerwick, where of course a murder has occurred. We get sense of Whalsay, but not that much. I felt disappointed with the atmosphere — there wasn't enough of it. There's an archaeological dig (typical for Shetland) and a few families we sort of get to know, and a little history with a minor inclusion of the Shetland Bus (a support operation in which Shetlanders bravely helped German-occupied Norway during WWII), but it just didn't come together for me. Jimmy Perez is doing his regular thing, and his subordinate Sandy — whose parents live on Whalsay, in the house where he grew up — plays a big part. Sandy is not a terribly interesting character, so that did not help. I also felt let down by the conclusion and the revealing of who done it.

On the other hand, maybe this was a "slump" book in the series, and maybe the fourth book will be loads better?

.

3.5 stars. Better than the second one. Her method of the twist at the end is getting old. The twist always comes too late, and has interesting plot details that I wish could have been explored at more length. She's not as deft as Agatha Christie at wrapping it all up at the right time and pace.

Didn't guess this one, tho in reality forensics/pathology would of cleared up the details quicker. Good weekend reading....:)
