The way the obsession with one another was beautifully written. I live for this.

˳೫˚∗ pre-reading review :
↷ ‘been waiting to read this one for so long, it was sold to me as a gruesome, thriller kind of dark academia book.. and you add on top of this queer characters, so here we go! (i really have high hopes)
˳೫˚∗ 09.04.2024 review :
★★★ ─── 3.5 stars.
fav quote of the book : "It's always been real for me, every second - anything else I've ever loved is so wrapped up in you now, you're all that's left." [...] All they were - all they had ever been - was a pair of sunflowers who each believed the other was the sun."
this might sums up the book entirely and perfectly, how poetic and heartwrenching and real this quote is, i think it took me a few minutes to recover from it and actually move on in the book.
i don't have a lot to say about this book, it took me almost a month to finish it because there were so many things happening in my life, but it was always a joy to pick it up and read it anyway! it's a book that needs to be enjoyed piece by piece, if i hadn't taken all this time, maybe it would have burnt me out, there were many things that made the reading experience a bit tiresome and too long compared to the thrilling aspect of the plot. and that's why i took out the 0.5 for it to be a 4 stars at least.
─── it wasn't exactly a dark academia book per say ; yes, paul (the main character) was super intelligent and definitely frightened me most of the time, but the setting didn't give me those vibes. it's kind of a thriller, an absolute indecent and a crazy kind of queer love story, and a story about loss, about discovering who you are and accepting your fucked up ways of being. i would recommend it if it's a genre you're already used to, if paul & julian seem to be the type of character you hate loving while trying to understand them and how they got where they are, otherwise you might not like it as much!
