i honestly don’t have much to say. this didn’t change my life, but i thoroughly enjoyed reading this. it was like a soap opera, with endlessly bad decisions, so many characters and moving parts, and, of course, a toxic love story at it’s center. it was fun! i found myself rooting for julian and paul while also not really liking paul at all that much.
if only “fast car” by tracy chapman was out at the time, maybe paul would’ve driven off to montreal with julian instead of trying to strangle him in the woods.

the writing was really rich and not too purple, in my opinion. the letters between paul and julian over the summer was a favorite moment. they showed just had badly paul misunderstood their dynamic while also being a nice lead up to the events that happened at julian’s house.

also, it was jarring to finish the great believers audiobook and going into this one. same narrator, talking about a charlie and julian. i felt like i played the wrong one for a second.

overall, nice read! i’m sorry, paul, i would’ve defended you more if you were a girl. #juliandidnothingwrong

Viscerally upsetting. Beautifully crafted. Could’ve been at least 100 pages shorter.

This book is deeply disturbing. The content actually made me sick. I started reading this book because it was being compared to “The Secret History”. But if that is why you are considering reading it, please don’t. I decided to give 2 stars instead of 1 because it was well written.

reminiscent of Jude St. Francis (A Little Life); so interesting the contrast of where loneliness & isolation can lead a protagonist, as well as how it blurs the reliability of the narrator. reading from that kind of self-deprecating POV becomes tedious at times, but never pointless: the tension in the story builds on this foundation of the anti-hero's twisted inner monologue. the loathing you come to have for Paul heightens the angst we're to understand he feels inside him. the themes & recurring motifs of this book are all executed flawlessly;
the chess one in particular had my jaw on the floor upon reading the last page & reading back through to find its other occurrences to fully appreciate the genius of its inclusion.
as well as the lesser motif of animals & their contrast to humans
i had to cover up the last few pages of this book as i read it to savor my anticipation & avoid spoiling the conclusion  for myself too soon.

Ever felt like there aren’t enough romance books where it’s _just_ the two of you in the world and no one else? If so, this is the book.

Maybe I’m just dumb, but when I got to the end I just was like “I don’t understand any of how we got here.” Julian and Paul’s everything was just incomprehensible to me, which was a problem since that’s the entirety of the book.
