Great to read after Masters of Doom. He adds a lot more fascinating if not heartbreaking detail about his childhood and then a very honest account of the fall out he had with his company Id Software, which relates back to his childhood. I also liked the added technical detail that illustrated just how innovative their first few games were.

I highly recommend the audiobook. He's not a performer but he's also not trying to perform here like some authors do when reading their book, which then end up being unlistenable. Instead, it's like having a little Romero in your ears telling you his life story. I flew through this one, plugging in my AirPods whenever I had a chance.

A fantastic recollection of the games that captured me as a kid, I wasn't truly obsessed with gaming until I found Doom on a 486 at my friend's house and nothing's been the same since.

I was enthralled from cover to cover as I gained a deeper appreciation for the art that encapsulated so much of my '90s existence

Thank you so much John, you inspired many a land party in hours of Homebrew PC action and finger cramps.

If you are a nerd and have nostalgia for DOOM, Wolf3D, Commander Keen, BBSes etc. then the first two thirds of this book are a mildly interesting read, albeit very poorly written. After Ion Storm it rapidly becomes incredibly dull, cos who wants to read about Gunman Taco Truck or whatever else nonsense dude has done since id? Not me!
