I am so relieved that EG is back on track again that five stars came easily. The previous book was utterly horrible, and I was indeed anxious when I started listening to this audiobook. But from early on I was captivated, and I can easily recommend this book.

The actual end kept me from giving this read 4 stars. Be aware...it's a long one. I was interested in the characters. But after such a long read/listen, there were just too many neat little bows to tie things up...and one really aggravating decision by one of the characters. Good audio thriller.

First... I do not like Isabelle Ardery. She has been bothering me since she was introduced and I cannot get used to her. Her attitude towards Lynley and Havers bothers me big time.
I enjoyed this book. It is a real whodunit whit enough clues to puzzle along. There where a bunch of possible suspects making it even more fun to guess along on motive and means.
Tommy and Barbara are my favourite detectives. I am glad that Thomas is moving on and seems to be back on track. I had a difficult time recognizing him after that one book where terrible things happened. Barbara is always so blunt it is making me grin but it is great that after all these stories the chemistry between these two characters is still working.
The other characters in the book were interesting. There where a lot of influences with Clare Abbot being a well known author and feminist. Caroline being totally weird in the first place already and having totally lost it after loosing her son. Charlie the other son who clearly has a few problems on his own. For a change there are not to many characters involved in the whole story. I love it when characters are easy to keep apart though I must admit, knowing some of the characters so well already I probably have less difficulty keeping them straight and more time to concentrate on the the other people

I have read this book twice and this one is just not working for me.
Barbara has been having so many problems in the last book. Already being scrutinized by everyone except Lynley. She stumbles trough this book as Ardery is even more set than normal to get her out. With Barbara not being Barbara there is less fun and I usually like her train of thought. On the other hand the uncomfortable position she is in and how that affects her personality are well written.
The investigation in this book is a bit off too. Usually I can puzzle along very well but I felt I missed a lot in the first place but after reading it again I noticed that it just was not there.
There are some very situation changing things happening in this book and I am curious where this is going.

This was my first Elizabeth George book. I liked the story and the suspense at the end; however, there was at least 200 unnecessary pages (of 576). I could have done without the sideline story of Daidre or Fiona/Rory, for example as they really didn't add to the main tale.

Page turner

Keeps you guessing. Just when you think you know who did it, a shocking revelation turns your theory on its head. You will blaze through this book, as the story is so captivating, and if you buy it, you certainly won't regret it!

Interesting enough but too much of the storyline was devoted to the opposing characters.

Enjoyable Lynley and Havers mystery, with excellent characters and good pacing. The previous book in the series was kind of a slog, but this felt more on track. And I always love a book with an unapologetic feminist as a sympathetic character.
