The two stars are entirely for Fred. Fred was adorable and lovable just like the basset hounds I have owned. Unfortunately, Fred deserved better than this book. I'm not generally a fan of chick lit, but I have been told that Jennifer Crusie writes quality books. Maybe I chose the wrong one, but I didn't like this book at all. I thought the heroine's hang-ups about the age difference were overblown. There were the parts where lots of fighting could have been avoided by the characters actually talking to each other. There were the kooky (but not at all believable) side characters. There was the heroine, with her self-esteem issues. It basically read like it was written with a "how to write chick lit" handbook. Sad, because I really was hopeful, and the first chapter was hilarious!

I always pick up her books, when I want to laugh out loud, and need the comfort of a happy ending. This one I also shared with my mother, who loved it too. As in most of Crusie's books, there is a dog featured in this one, but oh the imagery she created with this basset hound had me doubled over, guffawing.

Crappy story, but how could I resist reading a book with a sweet Basset on the cover? Fred was the best part of the story. Too bad it wasn't all about him.

Cute, short little novel. Lots of likeable characters, some downright hilarious dialogue, but in the end I'm afraid I really didn't feel the sexual chemistry between Nina and Alex, no matter how many times Crusie told us about it. I wish I had, because I thought the two of were really sweet together, a really nice match. Perhaps if the book were longer there could've been more build up adding to the romance and sexual tension? Anyway, a fun, quick read. And a nice palate cleanser after the rather dark stuff I've been reading lately.

OMG why has it taken me so long to read a Crusie book?

A really fun, sweet book. It's short, but able to really convey a lot of information about the characters in that brief time. Plus, the most adorable part-basset, part-beagle, part-manic depressive sidekick.

A super cute story!!!

re-read July 2010 on audio. The audio version is very good and I think I may have liked this book even more the second time around.
