Reminds me of the Dan Brown books but better in so many ways. Had to spend a sleepless night because I couldn't put it down.
I started reading this book the day of the most recent Israeli/Palestinian conflict (I didn't plan it that way) so in many ways it seemed relevant. The book starts of slowly, and may have a bit too much excess back story, but once it finally picks up it was hard to put down.
Sussman was a real discovery for me, with a wonderful lead character, an Egyptian detective. The details on modern Egypt are atmospheric and compelling. An intricate plot ranging across middle east politics. Very gripping, great fun and with just a smidgen of the mystical. Highly recommended.
Impeccable
That wasn't a rollercoaster that was the entire amusement park.
My Gawd the book has everything. History, wars, emotions, murders, mysteries and LOTS of secrets.
The love, loss and despair and hope that was presented in this book was really something else.
My braincells enjoyed with every single page of this book.
I've read all of Dan Brown's book and I've never thought that'd find something similar to it, but here we go.
The amount of satisfaction I got from this book is insane. E
verything was written in a very clever way and the characters has depth and you can feel deeply to each one of them and you're so attached to all of them and to their devastating stories.
And I really loved the religious and historical accuracy that the book held.
I'd have loved if the writer just provided some translation for the Arabic and the Jewish lines that was written in thw book, but it's all good.
And we can't forget the scenes of humor that was added to the book in a very smart way.
And the human touch was added in just the right amount.
The writer did a phenomenal job in capturing the habits, clothes, sense of humor, morals and their culture . This was spot on.
And I honestly do believe that violence against civilians isn't the right path for both sides. Only peace and the willingness to open up to new ideas and to the other side that'll make things easier.
It was so ironic seeing three different people from three different nations and different backgrounds and all they wanna do is just spreading negativity, hate, blood and violence . They might seem different from the outside, but they all used the same wicked ways to do so, they all used religion to manipulate, convince and brainwash people so they'd kill under the name of god. They all though that they were doing something for their people and that they're protecting them, but at the end they did nothing but causing more damage and more people to die for nothing but their arrogance and egocentric selves.
It's worth mentioning as well the way the book and the chapters were written, everytime I read a chapter I get way too deep and focus with the character and then the next we have other parts with different charactera which makes me get excited to find out the things they discovered. This was the most fun Russian roulette kind of stories.
This is so perfect and I can't think if anything extra to add.
This entire book is just chef's kiss.

A dead body is discovered in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, and Inspector Yusuf Kahlifa of the Luxor police starts the investigation. What appears to be a simple case turns out to be something quite the opposite.
At the same time, we follow the actions of another police officer, Arieh Ben-Roi in Jerusalem, and also the actions of the Palestinian newspaper reporter Layla al-Madani, also based in Jerusalem.
All three of them are on the trail of the same ancient secret - a secret that goes back to the year 70 AD, and the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. As it turns out, the Nazis discovered the secret during World War II, but hid most of the evidence of it in an abandoned mine at the end of the war.
THE LAST SECRET OF THE TEMPLE is often compared to THE DA VINCI CODE, and it is easy to see why. I really enjoyed THE DA VINCI CODE, and despite having all the right ingredients, THE LAST SECRET OF THE TEMPLE is not a new DA VINCI CODE. The main problem is that the plot develops too slowly - it is not at all as action packed as THE DA VINCI CODE (save for the last 100 pages or so out of almost 700 pages). Also, there are a lot fewer puzzles/mysteries to solve on the way to the finale.
There were however several things I liked about it. The story is set in Egypt and Israel, and the descriptions feel quite authentic. Even more so, because of the numerous words in Arabic, Hebrew and Yiddish that are used throughout the book. And even if the plot develops too slowly, it is a good story. It is fascinating with an ancient secret, and I liked the plot twist at the end as well.
In summary, not a new DA VINCI CODE, but a good story, albeit too slow to develop.

Not as pacy as Dan Brown, but a good read none-the-less, although a long one. The pace picks up halfway through, and it’s really quite good from there.
The tension and suspense in this novel is exciting, the pace is good, and the surprises of some of the characters were very well done. I found it interesting that I started reading this right before the latest violence broke out in the region... It really made me more aware of the subtleties in the character makeups. I am definitely interested enough to find others in the series, as I note this is #2 for the main character.
Enjoyed the conclusion to the book. However, it was difficult to get started because the various pieces to the puzzle seemed so unrelated I had trouble staying with it.
