Interesting book. Kind of strikes me as Arthurian legends meet Norse Mythology. A pleasant first read. I'm intrigued to see where the book goes!

This book was okay. I just wish that the only queer characters weren't the villains and generally portrayed as effeminate, weak, (These words and their synonyms were used to describe these two characters more than once) and despicable. I know that queer-coded villains were once a mainstay of entertainment, but in a YA book written in the present, this strikes me as homophobic.

normally i only 2 star things I hate, but this was so meh I can't give it 3.

This book (or part 1 of a book) has many flaws throughout, but overall I enjoyed this YA fantasy story. It is very simplistic, has editing issues, and borrows heavily from others but I don't really care. It was fast paced and I was still entertained.

I don't think I could have read this in print. Very glad I can listen to the audiobook as I multitask. I found it difficult to get into at the very beginning. But they sold me with the cute spiritual animals.

Story is thrilling. It fills up my bucket for adventure, fantasy and tabletop fun.

Decent plot, not worth buying, though. Find it at a library and you'll enjoy the fast paced easy read.

Good: plot, characters.
Needs: more variety, twists, surprises.

I found this story easy to follow, but there were no particular surprises along the way. As soon as the book opens with the main character's dreams and opinions about his family, you know the beginning of the story fairly accurately, and nothing changes the obvious plot as the book progresses. I enjoyed the plot nonetheless and was swept along in spite of not wondering where the story would go next.

I read the first three books in the series in an afternoon, and was willing to pick up the next, but I wouldn't recommend it as a purchase because unlike the famous fantasy of the era, I doubt I'll ever pick this up again. It swept me along as I read, but I don't feel like there's anything I'm likely to learn from another read-through.

If you want a light, fluffy, fantasy, aimed for 12 year-olds, this is for you. It was ok, I read it, finished it. The writing was simplistic, definitely not on the level of Rowling, as a reviewer indicated.

Ooof I wasn't sure what all the 1 star reviews were about, but at the 3.5 hour mark of the audiobook it's time to call it quits.

The character is a Mary Sue. Has the most intense powers anyone has encoutered. Adopted by a king. Saved the life of the prized knight. Princess is immediately smitten with him. A lot of instantaneous "wow, look at all these amazing things happening to me!"

Also saw another review mention how this book is made up of moments from other classic fantasy authors. There is definitely some Sword in the Stone, and wannabe Tolkein.

It's very much the "I want to be the star of the series, so I will write this character with immense luck to experience EVERYTHING."

Returning and leaving in the DNF pile.
