After just one book I can tell that this series has the opportunity to be one of my favorites of the year. The found family? The yearning? The stubborn and fierce FMC? Immaculate. Ophelia nearly gave me a stroke with all her secret keeping and refusal to accept help, but I understand the desire she has to protect everyone she loves. She’s been training her whole life to be a warrior and second in command of their people, it’s no wonder she feels the weight of the world on her shoulders.

After all the twists and turns and the epilogue…I have no idea what is going to happen next and I can’t wait to find out. Based on reviews and reactions I’ve seen from friends who have read the series so far, it’s sure to destroy me…and that is just fine.

This book is filled with youthful enthusiasm, adventure, and an endearing group of friends. The supporting cast of characters adds charm to the story, each contributing to the overall dynamics of the group.

Ophelia is bitter and defeated after her people lost the war and her love vanished. "It was fury at the world. At the perfect life that slipped through my fingers two years ago as Malakai walked away from me for the last time." Despite her self-destructive behavior, Ophelia cares deeply about her friends and her people and is determined to do her duty and protect them all. After an ominous meeting with a mysterious visitor, Ophelia and her friends embark on a perilous journey to try to save their people.

Favorite quotes:

"“My North Star,” he muttered against my hair. “I love you, Ophelia.” “Until the stars stop shining"

This book will appeal to fans of Cassandra Clare.

This book was a good start to what seems like a promising fantasy series! While it started out a little difficult for me to follow, I eventually got sucked in by the action and intrigue. The FMC is a stubborn and ruthless warrior, which I enjoyed, but the true stars of this book were the amazing side characters. I love a dynamic entourage and Ophelia’s found family gave me exactly that!

The plot felt somewhat clunky and at times a bit repetitive, but overall it flowed well! There were several small moments throughout the book that hinted further mystery and potential plot twists, which definitely piqued my curiosity. I also really like the magic system and its basis in nature, as well as the mystical creatures. Overall, it was a solid intro into this fantastical world filled with love, loss, curses, prophecy, trials, and friendship. This book has many layers that I’m looking forward to unwrapping in the rest of the series!

I think it's funny how time works sometimes and I read this book for the first time last year in July and I decided to reread it so I could continue the series...in July. Didn't catch that until just now but it made my day.

Since this book was a reread for me I kind of knew what was going to happen, but I also didn't at the same time because when I finish books all info just goes out the window. (I hate it, but that's why I love to reread books) I loved being in this world Nicole created and I love all of the characters introduced so far-- Ophelia, Malakai, Santorina, Jezebel, Cypherion, and Tolek. Honestly, Tolek might be one of my favorites and he reminds me of some of my other favorite characters.

I do think it took some time for the story to get to the main plot and it also did feel a bit all over the place at times. Some of the scenes didn't really feel not fleshed out per say, but maybe the pacing was just off. I think the Undertaking was a let down for me because it was so hyped as this big thing but then it just felt underwhelming.

I liked the flashbacks and being able to go back and see some of what lead the MC's (Ophelia and Malakai) to make some of the decisions that they did. Those were fun. I do think Ophelia forgave him too fast-- should've made him grovel girl. I'm excited to see where the story will go in the next book in the series though.

3.75* SLOW START. But I persevered as i read so many reviews saying just stick with it & they were so right. The last 35% of the book made up for the rest and I've heard/seen that each book gets better & better
