While not a literary masterpiece, Flyy Girl is a relic of its time. It reminds me of the kinds of books I’d sneak and read when I was in middle school. Although it wasn’t particularly gripping and the story dragged at times, it was nostalgic and familiar.

This book really resonated with me when I read it back in my teen years. I really connected with Tracey and remember the days of wanting to be "fly". I was boy crazy and ready to take the world by storm. I had my own run-ins with Bruce's and Victor's and was really able to relate to the story.

That was back in 1997 and I'm not sure how I would react to this book now. I have an ( my first autographed book) copy ( my fourth one to be exact, this book also taught be the truth about lending books to "friends", another copy just fell apart) but part of me likes the idea of enjoying this book for what it meant to me then. Even thinking about it I Can see the immaturity in Tracey Maybe one day i'll re-read it again. I just hope it doesn't make me cringe like my pictures from that time period do :)

Whenever I don’t like a character I learn more about them and realize they just like me. I loved the characters and how they developed (albeit a little slowly). The author really tackles some important topics (sex, family issues, friend issues, ego issues, etc.) and does a beautiful job putting them into words and showing these through the characters.
I admire Tracy’s will and drive. She’s passionate and people are drawn to that. Her style, her attitude, she really is flyy. Her search for love is one I am familiar with and I like how Tracy never gave up. Never doubted herself… (for long).
I think I might’ve enjoyed this more when i was a little younger but i think im able to appreciate the messages more at the age i am now.
Great read.

During a dinner about a month ago, my friends and I discovered I had never read an Omar Tyree novel. I set about rectifying that with Flyy Girl since the cover says it’s an urban classic and all. Unfortunately, the appeal of this book missed me by about 25 years. I kept waiting for the character to grow up until I realized she was going to be a child the entire novel and the interaction with each boy was basically the exact same dialog over and over and over again. The indefatigable game playing and colorism lasts for over 400 pages! Maybe if I were from Philly or at the house parties in the 80s it would have been nostalgic for me, but I wasn’t, and it wasn’t. I was bored, decidedly not nostalgic for the 80s and 90s, and ready to read anything where the girls had more insightful things to say that I don’t know and I guess. Omar Tyree officially checked off the list.

kind of interesting book about a girl growing up in philly, having sex when she was just still a child, trying to navigate through school and not get caught up in gangs and drugs.
