Ultimately overlong and unsatisfying read. Whereas parts were enjoyable, the excruciating amount of detail (sometimes pages at a time for minor characters) and lack of a satisfying plot lead me to regret having stuck with this one. Avoid.

White Teeth is about a lot of things, perhaps too many things. Above all, it’s a multigenerational saga that contemplates how the traditions and actions of ancestors reverberate through generations. As each new addition to a family desperately tries to make a mark on the world, they become entangled in all that came before and all that’s bound to come again.

It’s a book I respected more than enjoyed. White Teeth is populated with a fascinating and richly fleshed out cast of characters supported by funny, insightful and masterful prose and dialogue that is filled to the brim with personality and emotion. However, there were times where the battle between tradition and modern living got a bit heavy handed and, for a book that felt long, the ending seemed rushed and a bitter less satisfying than I hoped. This one I might recommend to those who love explorations of generational traumas, but certainly nor one that will resonate with everyone

Finally finished!! Honestly this book was wild and much different than I thought it would be. It was simultaneously a drag and one that I couldn’t put down. I could read a hundred pages at once and then not pick it up again for a few weeks. At the end of the day, I liked that it was all build up to a finale event but wow the twists and turns. Glad I’m finally done with it!!
