Finally finished!! Honestly this book was wild and much different than I thought it would be. It was simultaneously a drag and one that I couldn’t put down. I could read a hundred pages at once and then not pick it up again for a few weeks. At the end of the day, I liked that it was all build up to a finale event but wow the twists and turns. Glad I’m finally done with it!!

Liked it. Didn't love it. Liked the characters. And there were parts that I REALLY enjoyed, but overall, it was just a good book.
If I were rating this book on a level of writing, I’d give it maybe a 4, because yes the writing was good. It was well written and thorough especially with the characterization of the characters. BUT, I tend to do my ratings based on level of enjoyment which unfortunately is closer to a 2… I just could not get into this book at all. And maybe that’s on my fault, I saved the reading assignments to the last day so I always crammed as much as I could into the last minute. Also, listening to it at 2x speed and very often getting distracted. It just did not catch my interest which made it so hard to enjoy reading it for class. I felt the plot dragged on, even still I don’t really know what the plot was? The climax came at the last 10 pages which was confusing? I don’t really know what happened in the book… or what direction it was heading in.. and I just felt it kinda dragged on. I hate being so critical of it, those are just my thoughts:(

This book was long, spanned half a century and followed three families - and it never got boring. The characters are all so vivid and unique, the prose is so witty, and the social commentary is *chef’s kiss *. It showcased the cyclical nature of human life & history in an amazingly accurate way, as well as the lives of people with different ethnic and religious backgrounds. It taught me a lot about the inner workings of people I rarely meet in my day-to-day life, as well as English culture, and it was a lot of fun.
I did feel like it was maybe a tad too long, and that certain histories of people we meet could have been left out. I’m also not a big fan of the slurs that were used; sometimes they made sense for the characters, but at others it felt more like a sign of the times when this book was released. It is over twenty years old now, after all.
