I read this in the mid 90s at some point and really want to re-read it again.

A fantastic portrayal of Martin’s dream and Malcolm’s nightmare. Cone highlights their stories, similarities, differences, and legacies.

This book contains far more knowledge about both Dr. King and Malcolm X than anything I ever read in school, by an extremely wide margin. I'm deeply grateful to have access to this insight into their contexts, characters, and contributions, because (as Cone himself said), "If Americans of all races intend to create a just and peaceful future, then they must listen to both Martin and Malcolm."

Fantastic book!
The author details and compares the individual upbringing, influences, leadership styles and legacies of two great leaders. He explains in great detail the many ways Martin and Malcolm were different yet also very much alike. A little long-winded but well worth the read. I came away with a better understanding and appreciation for these two imperfect, yet great men.

This is my first introduction to Dr. James Cone, and it certainly won’t be my last. What a well-researched historical critique of Dr. King and Malcolm X! While I knew overall that their philosophies moved closer together later in their lives, I didn’t realize exactly how much the two thought alike near the end. The fact that Malcolm X was assassinated mere days before their second scheduled meeting? Heartbreaking for so many reasons. This is definitely a work to revisit to further analyze the similarities and differences between these two leaders.
