Gut wrenching
This was a dark, toxic romance and not for the faint of heart. It’s not your typical read though because this is could be somebody’s life and it’s real. This is somebody’s reality. I loved this book and understand Hallie and felt so much for Zayne. However, I hated the way it ended. No closure, no epilogue. However, this story is important and I feel like most people in real life toxic relationships don’t end up with a HEA. However, when you’re dealing with addiction on top of that it can be really hard. Having said that, it’s fiction and I wish we could have had an epilogue. It was written really well though and flowed easily. I read it one day and could not put my kindle down for a second.
Ok, so I see there is a second book after writing this review, which I will start now, and I hope we can get some good closure.

Toxic, dark, and emotional
Please check your trigger warnings. This story gripped at my heart and mind. As someone who struggles with mental health issues, this hit close to home. Zayne and Hallie are like magnets, drawn to each others darkness. The thrive on pain, passion, and toxic love. The spice level was unexpected and Zayne's dominance is all consuming and so seductive. The story of obsessive love, addiction, mental health issues, and raw emotions were.gripping throughout. Overall 5/5 with a 3/5 for spice.

SHATTERED HEARTS is the first book in The Broken Series, and let me tell you, it's a very powerful read! In SHATTERED HEARTS, Shae touches upon many heavy topics, such as toxic relationships, drug abuse / addiction, and mental health.
Mental health is so important to me and I always love when there's mental health representation in a book. The book includes several types mental illnesses and I thought they were portrayed with the utmost respect and accuracy.
There is so much emotion, pain, and tragedy in the book so please take care to check the trigger warnings prior to reading. I love Shae's writing and I'm so looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Well…this book was something. I found the recommendation on tiktok and based on the description and the recommendation I thought it’d be a dark romance that gave me Lily and Lo from the Addicted series type relationship because of the struggles of addiction, mental health and codependency but that’s not even close to what Zayne and Hallie’s relationship was like. I almost DNF because in my opinion he cheated on Hallie even though their relationship was toxic and they were on and off a lot. However in that particular instance he just made an assumption because she left and honestly I could not blame her. He’s got a lot of problems, I get that, but as obsessed and persistent as he was he didn’t even consider trying to find her and make sure she was okay especially when he basically half drugged her against her will. It could be I don’t know anything about the tendencies of people who struggle with bipolar 1 but I do have experience with a significant other who struggled with addiction and I know they don’t always make the best choices or follow common sense but I just think it’s an extreme leap. Some other things I wasn’t a fan of was how fast paced the book was which is interesting considering there are 2 books that follow which I will not be continuing, I just had to see how the train wreck would end. I found the time jumps a little awkward too. For example the dinner with his mom prior to it she said she needed to go home and study and then the next sentence she’s there at the dinner. I just think the timeline and the pace could have been slowed down more on Hallie’s perspective than Zayne’s only because Zayne was high or coming down from highs so his made a little more sense. I also did not like Zayne’s nickname at all and whenever books have “baby girl” as a pet name I think of that super cringey movie 365 days and it just gives me such an ick.
speechless
I honestly don’t have the words to describe this book. Just read it. Run out and grab it. Leave all ideas at the door. The way this book makes you think speaks volumes of this author.

This book was one h3ll of an Emotional rollercoaster but oh so good. I loved the rawness of the characters with their past traumas and history of addiction. Even their current battle with addiction throughout the book. I felt connected to each character in some way. Basically when they hurt I hurt too. Now I won’t lie I was angry a lot with Zayne but I know he battled with alot of self d3mons. Overall I enjoyed reading it. Does end in a cliffhanger so I am ready for book 2.

Hallie is on a path to self-destrucrion running from her past. Zayne is spiraling out of control with his on self-destruction. Can they make it through their volatile relationship and live happily ever after together?
Shae Ruby has done a beautiful job weaving a dark and toxic romance story with raw and realistic emotion. There are alot of possible triggers in the storyline and a medium amount of spiciness. There are alot of Rollercoaster highs and lows throughout the storyline, and I loved feeling every last one of them alongside the characters. Most romance books (even the dark ones) I am rooting for the two main characters to have the happily ever after together. I want one to take the beast of the other, both to see past the others flaws. I can not say that about Hallie and Zayne. There were times I hoped for the best to happen for the best of them and there were times I was screaming at them to run far and fast from each other...but either way I was invested from page one until the very last page. I cried happy tears and ugly tears (especially in Part 3!) The best stories enlist this type of emotions!
I highly recommend this book to readers who like/love Dark Romance stories, toxic love stories, or romance books that are not all flowers and sunshine. I recommend Shattered Hearts to anyone who has or has loved someone with a mental illness and addiction.
