The way I knew this book would hurt my feelings 😭

Let me preface this — this is a dark book and please read the TWs at the beginning. There is so much on page content. Take care of yourself and your mental health, PLEASE 🫶🏻🖤

Even though this was dark and seriously so heartbreaking overall — the toxicity of Zayne and Hallie’s relationship was next level. They are some of the most broken characters I have ever read and I am truly obsessed. I was hooked from the very beginning. Addiction, avoidance, and obsession is the name of the game with these two.

I am so hopeful for them and that they will get their HEA but I know damn well the road there is going to be tough as shit 😩😩

This was a very heavy read and I am happy that it's over. I understand that can come off as harsh, but I mean it because this book was very dark and deep. This was not the book for me however, there was great a plot and decent flow. But the story was very chaotic between the characters and I couldn't fully connect with them. Not because the author didn't pull you in with her writing because she very much did, but I have not suffered several of the traumas depicted in the story so I could not relate. This is a good book and if you are looking for a deep and tragic love story, then this is the book for you.

Wow! This book had me in a choke hold from the beginning. Hallie and Zayne's relationship was both hard to read about and an obsession. The emotional ups and downs broke me and had me wanting to throw my kindle. Thought it was totally worth it to read.

After only a few chapters I went ahead and bought the other two books in the series.

Okay okay - hear me out: this review comes from a place from my own bias as a reader and is in no way indicative that I think the book is bad. Okay? Okay.

So I was given an ARC copy from Shae and I am so honoured to have read her work and am very proud for what she’s accomplished. What I loved about this book most of all is her writing style. She has the talent and the skill. A lot of lines really aimed for the jugular and hit in all the right places. Her prose is beautiful and poetic and boy oh boy does she sure know how to end a chapter.

Where the book lost points for me is just on a personal level. I found the plot a little repetitive, which was likely a stylistic choice because of the trauma and cyclical nature of the book, which may not be a problem for some readers, but I still felt like I was re-reading scenes at times. Moreover, I would have liked to feel a little more excited and morally torn by the toxicity, but I personally found myself feeling mostly sadness and pity for Zayne and Hallie, and I didn’t find myself rooting for them. The last thing that took me a little out of the story was that I felt there was a lot of telling things that could have been shown and I found Shae’s gorgeous prose bleeding into the character dialogue in a way that just didn’t feel natural to me.

However, I would absolutely read more of her work and cannot wait to see what else she comes up with. So proud of you and your debut novel, Shae!

The mental health in this book was my favorite part. I enjoyed reading about it and how it looks different to every person. The romance I didn’t like and I also felt there was so much sex. And since majority of the book was about Hallie and Zayne’s relationship I grew bored.

“He's my kryptonite, yet I've never wanted anything to wreck my life this way. I consciously open myself up to the hurt, welcoming it if it means keeping him too.”

This book—god it was beautifully written and so fvcking tragic. This book takes you on an emotional rollercoaster of mental illness, toxic love, childhood trauma, and add!ction. Shae does an exceptional job explaining & writing about mental illness and add!ction, as well as detailing the effects on not only the individual, but those around them. Because of this, the book was very easy to get lost in, and I constantly wanted to see what the outcome was going to be. Their relationship is messy, toxic, and brutal, but they can’t get enough of each other. Hallie and Zay are truly star crossed lovers and it was rough to read about their lows sometimes. Part three (The Crash) was where I really started feeling emotions towards the situations and characters. I will not go into detail, because I refuse to spoil it, but if any of this appeals to you, I highly recommend.
