When I first heard of the title of the book from one of my IB students, I thought it was another Shakespeare or Ancient Greek history book I had to read to help them with their assignments. But, boy, was I glad I was wrong! After finding the book and reading the short synopsis provided, I was instantly intrigued. Persepolis is my first graphic novel as an adult, and I quite enjoyed how Satrapi decided to depict her story quite literally.

This is a definite recommendation on my recommended list! Whether you enjoy history or graphic novels, or want to learn something new about another country, or specifically Iran, or read something out of your comfort zone, this is the book to read.

I had previously read part 1 of Persepolis but hadn't gotten around to reading the second part, so I was happy to read the complete collection all together. I feel like Satrapi accomplishes a great deal in this graphic memoir--it's a coming-of-age story, a country's modern history, an exploration of religious tradition and a desire for individuality. I think I could have benefited from knowing a bit more about the Islamic Revolution in Iran ahead of time because I struggled a bit to keep up with the political goings-on, but I think she did as good a job as she could have of condensing such complex issues into images with little text. Her style is so recognizable and works well with the narrative she's telling.

Couldn't put it down! I read it one night. It will make you laugh and cry, and it's also very educational. Drawings are beautiful.
