Part biography part “way to live your best life” lessons from Fred Rogers.

I loved Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood. I love the neighborhood of make believe. There is no show like this out there today. I think it may be where we need to return to to survive in this world. Messages like “I like you just the way you are” and “ you are special”. Grateful I got to grow up watching this show which definitely helped me grow my imagination, and also see how you can be you and do good on this world.

“But even when they developed adult tastes, for punk rock and sarcasm and post-modern fiction, the love Mister Rogers had shown them could sustain them for a lifetime, although they might no longer remember the details, beyond a vague nostalgia for trolleys” (Edward 137).
If I were reviewing Mister Rogers the person, I could go on for pages and pages about his significance to me personally and there wouldn’t be a rating high enough for me to give that would feel like enough. But. I’m reviewing Edwards’ book, not the man, so with that said, my rating is based almost entirely on the fact that while this book was a wonderful nostalgia trip for someone who grew up watching and loving Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, and emphasizes so many of the important lessons he gave to children (and hopefully some adults), Edwards’ book was just a bit too disjointed to fully engage me. Largely, the choice to write the first part, which is essentially a biography of Fred Rogers and his career in children’s television, as one giant long-form essay, made it difficult to put the book down and pick it up again with a clear memory of where I had paused in the narrative. With that being said, what Edwards does do is capture the spirit, mission, and lifelong lessons of Mister Rogers, making that the centerpiece of his book. Overall, I would still recommend this for anyone who, like me, grew up watching and loving Mister Rogers, and who may need a reminder, that someone can like you, just the way you are, by just you being you.

Mister Rogers was an incredible man. Good book, story told well.

Cannot recommend this book enough!

Anyone who loves Fred Rogers (and everyone *should* love him) needs to read this. Keep tissues handy.

What a wonderful book!! It is uplifting and you learn so much about our dear Mr Rogers. He made the world a better place. I listened to the audiobook but I am sure it is great in all platforms. I HIGHLY recommend it.

We learn so much about this man. He was a solo child, rich, fat, bullied and he turned into a super KIND and gentle man. After learning about his parents and grandparents, you see where he got this.

I needed this. A good heartwarming book. Mr. Rogers Neighborhood was a favorite growing up. We didn't get to watch Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network, it was ABC and Disney and PBS for us, which I didn't really care about. Mr. Rogers Neighborhood was such a good show and a balm to the soul for parents and children alike. I really enjoyed this book and learning about Fred Rogers as a person.

We should all be more like Mr. Rogers.

Incredible book-I would read and reread parts of it to really soak in the beautiful wisdom from Mister Rogers. A must read!
