I was a little disappointed that this turned out to be an abridged edition. This was more inspirational than instructional. If you are in a hurry, this listen can work. All in all, though, I would suggest reading the book.

A good little inspiration for creativity and writing. I'll be coming back to this when I need a boost of "who gives a " when I doubt myself.

Absolutely, one, if not the best book I've read about not just writing but being a creative person. I'd recommend this to everyone who struggles to recognize their true voice and how to work with it, how to let inspiration strike you and be it's friend, to understand that we are all divine beings with great potential and through this simple thing we can create and be as free from anxiety and failure, to ignore criticism or allow critics to fade our sparkle. Brenda writes exactly as she teaches: as if she is talking to a friend or a pupil and nudging them along to believe in themselves, their ideas, and what they're capable of. Her use of other artists, poets, and writers work doesn't intimidate, only encourage. There is no wrong in what you feel or think or create; there is only truth, and your ideas of experiences changing because everyone changes, grows, and gets over hurdles over time. My copy of this book is dog-eared to the max; pretty sure some pages are dog-eared from all corners. The next time I go through it, it'll probably be to underline passages that jump out of me, but so many chapters and simple ways Brenda expresses herself she sparks the idle energy within to express experiences, thoughts, feelings. Simply put, read this and I can't imagine you won't be changed by her words and want to jump at the chance to string together some sentences, paint, draw, dream to your heart's content, to work splendidly and see yourself/life with new eyes.

A true classic.

This book made me want to write and think and dream and, most of all, to feel. And that was in spite of listening to it as an audiobook read by what I can only assume was an angry Joe Biden.

If you want to be infected by the desire to write, start here.

A lovely, inspiring "pep talk" on finding your inspiration and believing that you have something valuable to say.
informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

This is one of my favorite books about writing and creativity. I highly recommend it for any writer that is seeking some inspiration that falls outside of the technical advice you are likely to find in the countless books on writing that are available. This book was written in 1938. But it was extremely inspiring for me as a young woman, after finding it in a Bay Area bookstore twenty years ago. I highly recommend it - particularly if you're searching for extra inspiration on your journey as a writer or artist.

This is my fifth or sixth time reading this book, but the first in four or five years, and the first time since I started my Goodreads account. This book has meant a lot to me, and often I find myself getting something new out of it with each read. I purposefully chose to start my year with this book as I see it as a sort of reset or a reminder to be my authentic self and write through my Truth.

Although it was written over eight decades ago, I find that so much of this book still resonates today. The thoughts and writings of well known artists and writers is fascinating and supplements Brenda Ueland's thoughts well, but what I adore most is when she includes the writings of her students. I found myself rereading the student short stories often.

This book was suggested to me by an old friend years ago, and this is one that I now suggest to other friends. Even if they don't have much interest in writing, I still think they can get something out of this book. A great start to my new year reading this book, so much so that I think I will read this book around the New Year, every year.

I read this after it was recommended on Felicia Day’s vlog and I’m so glad I did. Even if writing isn’t your cup of tea, this book is easily the most inspiring thing I have ever read. More than once she will point out that everything she is referencing can be used in any kind of creative endeavor, anything you’re passionate about.

The main thing to take away from this book is to let enthusiasm guide you but there are so many thought provoking pieces of advice that I really can’t do justice to, that I just don’t want to get too far into anything. Everything written in this book is undeniably positive and there is no question that Brenda Ueland was an incredibly kind woman, and would have been an amazing writing teacher, or really… life coach.

So, no matter what it is you want to do, or love to do I would highly recommend reading this book for a little boost of extra inspiration and oomph. I will probably be rereading this again within a few months just to make sure everything sticks in my brain, and years from now this will probably be one of the most read books on my shelf.
