Weirdly amazing book that recontextualizes a lot of the story and takes it in a really interesting direction. The perfect ending to the series - I'd stop reading after this one and just think that Letos plan worked. I could read about creepy worm king ranting on philosophy all day

Frank Herbert hated gay people. If you didn't know that before God Emperor then you will realize it early on in the book. This hatred ruins the only original character to return, Duncan Idaho, who is ghola'd up the wazoo. Still, Herbert makes it a point to let the reader know that Duncan's body is sculpted, muscular, and sensual, and that his face is handsome and attractive. He goes into detail about it more than once.

There is also a character named Nayla, who is basically a female bodybuilder. He goes into great detail about her masculine traits, as well. Hmm... It all makes me believe Herbert's hatred may have been a deflection of suppressed homosexual feelings he had within himself.

Anyway, I couldn't enjoy the book as much as I expected because of Herbert's homophobia. I just couldn't make that separation.

Leto Jr. is the star, and is now a giant Jabba worm human. He has lived the billions of lives of his ancestors, as we are told over and over again in "Children" and now this book. Not a single one of them was a gay person.

The book could have been a lot shorter. At least 100 fewer pages, at LEAST. It is mostly Leto having conversations with people, which is okay because what he says really makes you think. But stuff is repeated a LOT.

lato is not as likeable a character as his dad, started to really run out with patience with this all by the end.

Also Frank Herbert has some fucked up ideas about sexuality and gender eh?
