Dune is the book that brought me into the sci-fi genre when I was a teenager. It has all the fantastical sci-fi technology and space magic a teenager loves, the melodrama of the politics, and the deep lore of a universe that is both vast and well thought out.
Re-reading it as an adult was almost like reading a new book - I found an even deeper universe and lessons all of us can learn from. I recommend this book to everyone, even those who aren't 'into' sci-fi, because it's so much more than science fiction. It critiques politics, leadership, equality, and imperialism - subjects that are often handled with absolutely no finess or skill.
100% a must read for anyone!

This was a slightly step up from the previous two books. Although the philosophizing continues, it was a little bit more bearable this time. I could not get on board with Siona at all, I couldn't care one bit what happens to her. It was very hard to root for any of them. Moneo I liked the most. This was a very strange and different story. 3.75*

The fourth Installment of the Dune Chronicles. I did not enjoy this one nearly as much as the others. I really felt like Leto II lost a lot of his humanity, which makes him a hard protagonist to root for. I didn't really enjoy the nonsensical word games everyone was playing. I mostly skimmed over them and assumed they were fake wisdom. I still enjoyed the universe that it is set in, and am on the fence about continuing the series. We will just have to see.

I feel like I just read a textbook about philosophy, power structures, sociology and whatever else.
At this point I think I should stop reading the series. There's some things to love about the series like Herbert's prose and his examination on some interesting themes but the lack of empathy I feel for ALL the characters, the forgettable plots and the slowly fade of the awe I felt from the world building of the first book are major downsides for me.
