I'd give this 3 1/2 stars. I'd read another book about Bess because I liked her a lot, but I thought the villain was a little obvious. I also had difficulty with
Spoiler Peregrine being so "normal" after so many years spent in an institution for the insane in a time when patients were not treated the way they are now in such places
.

Just discovered this great historical mystery series! Bess is a nurse from England serving in WWI. When her ship the Britannica sinks, she is sent home to recover from injuries she sustained when the ship was bombed. Before the accident, she promised a dying soldier that she would deliver a message to his brother. The message was to be conveyed in person. Bess is hesitant, but she decides while on leave to deliver the cryptic message. As she meets the family, she begins to suspect all is not as it seems and the message takes on a different tone when she meets the third brother Peregrine who has been confined to a mental institution since the age of 14.

The mystery was compelling and the characters were well drawn and interesting. Once I got into the story, it was hard to put down. Excited to read the next book in the series.

A character-driven mystery set in WWI, perfect for those of you waiting for the next Maisie Dobbs, or for people who like thoughtful historical mysteries in general. I think I like this series more than Maisie.

Finally gave this a go, after having the "Bess Crawford" books repeatedly recommended to me. I found the start very slow going - in fact I had to give it quite a few goes before I really got into it. But, I'm glad I stuck up with it because it really picked up and I'm looking forward to picking up some of the later books in the series.

A quick read. Not too difficult to figure out the circumstances surrounding the mystery, but a solid novel nonetheless.

Loved this book. Kept me engrossed until the very last page; cannot wait to tackle the rest of the series!

Full of coincidences and implausibilities (sure I'll keep an escaped lunatic hidden in my flat on a hunch), but I LOVED it. This book was exactly what I was looking for. I think I will keep reading these. Very similar to the Maisy Dobbs series.
