PROS OF THE BOOK:
A book about getting revenge is awesome
A book about friendship between girls
Kat is so freaking awesome. She’s literally one of my favorite characters, also there better be more chapters about her in the next chapter especially her family
Set in the U.S!
There’s some diversity in here
So much darkness in this book. This book explores with drugs, smoking, having underage sex, and more. This is what I needed because it happens, instead of doing the “I’m going to choose to ignore these issues since they’re obviously not real”, I hate when books do that. This book explores those issues in teenagers.
CONS OF THE BOOK:
It felt really straight-forward. There was no deeper substance to it
The writing was really choppy. It felt so clunky and out of place
The only exciting part of the book was the ending
The pacing was really slow a lot
There were times that I lost track on what the girls wanted revenge on

This book was amazing! Let me start off with, I bought this book at chapters for $5, so I wasn't expecting much when I went into it. But OMG this book had me reading at double speed! I needed to know what happened next! All of the characters were PERFECT! And when I say perfect I mean they were all described well, all had character flaws, and all were both likeable and relatable. Over all definitely a 5/5. I'm buying the next book tomorrow, if that doesn't tell you something...

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book, am I the only one? The story was interesting and the writing was really good but three points of view?! I felt like it was a little too much. I am used to reading books in one or two sittings and that's something that, I feel like, is close to impossible to do with this book. It's the characters! They were really intriguing, but again TOO MANY. The three girls are very different from one another and each of them have their own stories and at times it was hard for me to follow them. I found myself taking brakes to make sense of everything and there were a few times that I was contemplating putting the book down. But here is the thing, I didn't. There's something about Jenny Han's writing that always makes you want to know what happens next. And that ending... It just makes me want to start 'Ashes to ashes' right away. However, I think I might take a little brake before I pick it up.

Actual rating: 4.5

I LOVED THIS SO MUCH! Alright, it's time to calm down. I remember reading To All the Boys I've Loved Before in the summer and enjoying it so so much. After The DUFF I was in need for another contemporary read and decided to go for an author whose work I've liked before. And there was Jenny Han, calling me and I couldn't resist. The fact that this is a trilogy makes everything even better than it already is.

I am starting by talking a bit about the setting. Alright, I'll admit, I wasn't really sure about it at the beginning because I don't thing I've ever read a book set on an island and it caught me off guard. Once I got used to it and pictured everything I fell in love with Jar Island.

The first quarter is definitely very intriguing and mysterious. We get only glimpses of the girls' thoughts and memories. Jenny Han hints what could have happened to every each one of the them but doesn't tell what exactly it had been so, yeah, basically, she gives you enough time to go crazy out of curiosity. She doesn't reveal the girls' past at once, she does it very slowly, step by step which I, personally, really enjoyed.

It first Kat was probably my favourite character. She is so independent and sort of mature but at the same time she has that teen angst in her. I guess that's a result from what she's been through, losing two of her closest people at a young age, and the way she lives now. It's nice to see that behind the mask of the tough girl there are feelings and she cares even though acts like she doesn't. I loved how she goes on her own "adventures", how she's become friends with Kim and the relationships she's formed with her brother's friends.

I wasn't really impressed by Lillia's character at first and I don't mean that characters in general have to be perfect or what so ever for me to like them. No, but she wasn't really my favourite at the beginning. As I kept reading and getting more engaged with the whole story she started growing on me. What she's been through is horrible but she's found strength to move on in one way or another just like Kat and Mary but the different thing in her case is that she is also very considerate when it comes to her sister and wants to protect her from a similar experience. At some point she wants to back off and give up but she doesn't. Let's be honest here, noone can or has the right to blame her for that because she's the one who would lose the most if all of this came out, she is the one hurting people who are more or less close to her which is something Kat and Mary don't really go through.

Mary is, well, weird. Considering what has happened to her and the whole recovery process afterwards it is understandable because they have had a huge impact on her. Those two things would influence everybody who would have to experience them and if you are thirteen years old they can seriously mess you up. I am not judging her, not at all, this is just what's on my mind. I didn't really see it until she started blaming herself for a bunch of weird things that I don't get how could be connected to her. Other than that it was interesting reading from her perspective because she is very different from Kat and Lillia and she says it herself, they act a bit more mature than her. Her admiration for her aunt is a bit childish but adorable.

Reeve and Alex are also very interesting to read about because they themselves are mysterious with their actions. They are best friends but also so different from each other it's crazy. Talking about best friends who are different from each other I think it's time for Rennie to appear in my review. She's a bitch, a total bitch. There were moments when I was like "Oh, well, she's a human" but then she would do something awful and loose all my sympathy. I understand that she's had it hard but this is no excuse to treat people as if they were her slaves and she was the queen of Jar Island. The worst thing is that she is horrible to her friends, too, thinking only about herself and not considering what others want or need.

Ashlin and PJ are just there, not really doing anything. They are like the background of their group. Nadia isn't very interesting as well and yet managed to annoy me but as I think of the things I found tiresome I would probably do the same if I was fourteen again.

Overall, I really liked the book and can't wait to continue with the rest of the trilogy.

3 different girls, wronged in 3 different ways, join forces to fight back and get their revenge. Lillia is a popular cheerleader, living the good life. After she is raped, she sees her sister heading in the same direction and Lillia seeks to take out the guy she sees as a threat to her sister. Kat is considered a loner, all thanks to Rennie, her ex bestie, who shunned her and made sure everyone else in the school did, too. Now Kat is ready to make Rennie pay. After having her heart broken by Reeve, and almost making the biggest mistake of her life, Mary is back at school and eager to punish him for what he did to her years ago.

The characters in Burn for Burn were great, you really got to know them and care about what happened to them. I felt like some of their interactions were a little childish, but overall, they acted their age. I liked the dialogue and found it realistic and snappy. As for the plot itself, I enjoyed following along as they joined forces and planned their revenge. I liked most of the revenge plots and thought they were appropriately nasty, save for one that involved drugs, which I considered over the top and didn’t like.

The book moved along at a nice clip, but it took a while for the actual group plotting to take place. For the first half, we learned about the 3 girls and their various circumstances. It was just about after the halfway point that they finally got together and actually came up with some plans. For me, that was when it got more interesting. The POV changed between Kat, Mary and Lillia every chapter. At first, I couldn’t tell the difference between them, but after a few chapters it was easier to tell whose story was being told.

One thing I didn’t like was that Lillia never faced the fact that she’d been raped. She never told anybody and instead of taking revenge out on the guy who did it, she targeted a guy she suspected might one day scam on her sister. That part felt unsatisfying to me. There was a (maybe) paranormal bit that was unexpected and frankly, didn’t fit in with the rest of the story. It wasn’t fully developed, so I’m still unsure if it actually was a paranormal element, or something else altogether.

I love the cover. The 3 MCs are there, and they actually look like they’re described inside the book. The title is unobtrusive, and I really like the font. The faded colors are perfect.

The sum up: An interesting and guilty-pleasure story. It wasn’t great, but I will definitely check out the next book in the series.

4.5 stars

loved it, it's hard to tell the two styles apart, they are both so much a like, it's to hard, I'm already looking forward to the next part!

1st re read

Read it around the same time 3 years ago. Still love it just as much ❤

Entertaining tale of revenge, painfully contrived ending. May or may not be be back to write a longer review. Dunno.

Oddly, the ISBN in the ebook (90771442440777) takes you to what I'm guessing is the German translation.
