Loved the Characters in this Lesbian Romance
This beautiful novel explores the theme of wanting to get close to someone without getting hurt. Relationship and family trauma has left Saorise feeling alone, helpless about the future, and unwilling to form meaningful relationships with the people or world around her. Sometimes she seems so dense you want to shake her, but that's also what makes her feel real. Throughout the book, and as her relationship with Ruby develops, she comes to understand that loss is a part of living life and that losing something or someone doesn't make what you had any less special.

As much as I did enjoy this book, I feel like some things lacked for me. Completely personal, but the end made me sad and I found Saoirse so hard to get along with, even while feeling sympathy for her character. I really loved Ruby and Oliver. I really loved that it took place in Ireland (I didn’t know going in!), I really loved the B plot of Saoirse’s family. It all evens out to about three stars!

something about this book didn’t hit with me. not sure why but i think maybe that saoirse’s character trait of not being able to express her feelings was overdone to the point where it got annoying?
i understand the reason behind her actions but i feel like a coming of age should have me rooting for the character instead of being annoyed by her. i guess her being insufferably immature to her dad and cutting off her two closest friends *are* something a 17 year old would do and were there to show that she was emotionally hurting due to her mother… but sometimes i just caught myself rolling my eyes at her. i guess i wish she had been flushed out more so that there were more likable things (or even just any other character trait) about saoirse that would have me rooting for her, OTHER THAN understanding that she was in a difficult situation.
also why was ruby’s blue freckle never explained!?
all in all i think this book was more about a teenager dealing with family issues (dementia) and rather than a sapphic love story.

i’m so happy i finally got a f/f ya contemporary romance in my hands. like... i needed this representation!
i enjoyed the characters, their chemistry, the exploration of dementia and its impact, the setting in ireland, the gay, the low angst, most of the humor, and overall the whole idea of the novel! i thought some scenes were very well written and adorable.
on the other hand, sometimes the writing was so cliche that i rolled my eyes :/ it was painful on occasion and really detracted from the interesting points that the author was trying to make. the pacing was also off; scenes that were supposed to be very significant sometimes felt a bit abrupt.
i liked this book and i hope that ya publishers put out enough wlw books for every taste!! :)

Slightly tempted to give this a 4/5 because of Saoirse, but she made up for it in self-awareness and humor.
