Whenever I hear of a widespread "banned book," I always know those banning it are doing it out of fear. And so often when the ignorant fear something, you know it is worth your time. Because what they are afraid of most... Is growth.

This memoir is 100% worth your time.

Maia Kobabe's coming of age journey, beautifully illustrated in this graphic memoir, is full of discovery, acceptance, and love. E is a nonbinary human, figuring eirself out through a world where the very vocabulary for eir identity is still being forged in real time. This book includes a brave vulnerability for which Maia should be proud. If you have or love children, this is an incredibly valuable discussion about growing up.

I was actually surprised with how light it was... How hopeful and humorous each topic was touched upon. Of course the people that want to ban this book perpetuate narratives and hide behind grossly misconstrued lines. Because the real reason they want to ban books is to stifle growth. They are so afraid of that. And in comparison to Maia's bravery, they are so damned small.

This book hit too close to home in a good way, as someone who identifies as a trans-masc non-binary person it was nice to read some of the same experiences I had/have (especially with coming out and correcting people on pronouns), it's a nice reminder that I'm not totally alone in having these experiences.

I particularly admired how this story navigates conversations around consent, and considering the needs of another in a relationship the way you would want to be considered. This might mean walking away from a potential relationship because you know what the other person wants is not what you can or want to give at the time. It also means walking away when you feel uncomfortable rather than feeling obligated to engage in an interaction at your own expense. It's ok to ask for what you want and voice how you would like to be treated. Maia seems like a gentle soul, and I admired eir courage and kindness in relational and social situations in this story.
