I almost gave up on this book, but I don't DNF a book lightly, so I powered through.
I'm giving four stars to this one because I feel generous today.
This novel feels like a children's book, and if it wasn't because of a few paragraphs here and there, it would really be one. There's no thrills nor chills in this book. Everything, at the end, goes well as you would expect. Way too easy!
The book is certainly different, and you should read it just because.

3.5⭐️. When I first started this book I was really unsure if I would finish it. I decided to give it some time and it ended up being a pretty good but strange read. I, sometimes, just randomly pick books to read for no rhyme or reason and this was one of those. I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when it started and it seemed like some strange book about friendship and things we can’t explain or understand. Essentially the MMC is nice, too nice, and lets people screw him over so he has this supernatural being that he inherited from his uncle that looks out for his interests. There are people who have it out for him because he is too nice and they believe he will corrupt others to be like him and they ruin his life by getting him fired, his girlfriend ends things, etc. The creature helps MMC essentially get revenge on the people who have ruined his life in the most ridiculous ways of course and he has a woman who has been along for the adventure that seems to develop feelings for him. Throughout this there are flashbacks happening to his childhood that included a boarding school where humans were being turned into some human-insect alien hybrid thing. I have no idea why we were there except to add to the strangeness of the story and maybe highlight how weirdly optimistic and nice the MMC is…
Do I recommend this book? It depends who you are lol. It was a strange book to read but I wouldn’t say it was bad. It was only slightly boring in the beginning but if you can get past that you will probably find some level of entertainment in the rest of the pages. It was definitely funny and weird so if you like that read this.

2.3 stars - The allure of this book is the smart word play, campy characters, and sarcasm. At first it came across as clever. Then when it grew even more long winded instead of easing up, it started to feel like Koonzt just enjoys listening to himself talk. Like he finds profundity in exhaustive commentary. I learned that I do not. I found myself thinking more than once to, “get on with it,” and I particularly struggled with all stories of the past. I wouldn’t have finished it if it wasn’t a short book.

Good book just good
While Dean Koontz books are pretty good this one slips a bit. The story is good. The characters are good. But the story kind of drags. The last couple of chapters was completely not needed. The supposed comedy of the third person was lame. I really don't know how to class this. Kind of elements of scify and fantasy. Not horror or suspense.

I've never read any Dean Koontz before but this was free with prime and I'm trying to broaden my reading horizons so thought I'd give it a try!
I'm not sure how to review this book really. It was weird. I mostly enjoyed it. I liked the characters a lot. But it didn't blow me away or make me want to read more of Dean's work.

I'm not even sure what to say about this. Not at all like the other Dean Koontz book I read. This one is told like it has the narrator from a Wes Anderson movie and that is just so incredibly grating. And the story was insane. Glad it's done.
