I have loved Koontz's books since my early teens, and at least 2 of them (Phantoms and The Taking) are on my top ten favorite books list, so I'm sad to have to rate this one so low.
It was the usual "Good vs Evil" story just calling it "Nice vs Mean" this go round. That is fine. And for the most part I liked the characters. Would have liked to seen more of one of them that gets sidelined early on, but even that isn't why the 2 stars.
I'm used to Koontz's novels grabbing me and not letting go until the end. I won't read anything else and am done in 2 to 3 days at most. It took me most of two whole months to read this one.
Something about the way the story was told, narrator style, and the way the 4th wall was continuously broken kept taking me OUT of the story. As did, strangely enough, most of the characters names.
This is one of those that I'll probably not read again.

I tried so hard to like this book but hated every minute of it. Got to 60% of the way through but DNF in the end

This was on my to order list but I got lucky and it was part of the Kindle 'First Reads' so I got to read it early, for free.
Koontz is a master of bringing in mystical elements to everyday things and turning the ordinary on it's head. This is no exception. The three main characters are wonderful and engaging and you'll root for them from the start. If you are a regular Koontz fan, this novel clearly relates to the Odd series without being too blatant.
I really loved getting so much back story to the main character as it really moved the action along. There is much suspense but the action sequences were very short.
This book was so much fun, I read it in one day. I hope we will see Benny, Harper and Spike in future works from Mr. Koontz.
If you like suspense, mystery and Koontz, I highly recommend you get this book ASAP.

Dean Koontz is one of my most favorite authors and I have read every single book he has written. This one is much different than the kinds of books he usually writes. I did enjoy it, but was surprised that it is so unlike his other books.
