I loved this book. The charter development was so perfect. The romance was sweet. Deb was such a treat. Also I had so many annotations while reading. It was a blast. I had such a good time reading this.

It was a good book just something was missing for me.
Ok so technically 3.75 stars, I rarely give half or quarter stars but this one just did not deserve a 3 but at the same time lacked the 4 star rating for me. I loved the premise of this book from the restaurant aspect to the group of friends. I just reallly wanted this story to go a little deeper. Dessen,I believe, tries and succeeds doing this with McLean’s mom but the friendship dynamic of some of the characters felt forced and surface level. Still a good, fast read and I would recommend it.
It is no secret that Sarah Dessen is one of my favorite authors. The first book I read of hers was Just Listen, shortly after it's release. I have been hooked ever since. There's something about each book, that makes me think summer. And this last book mentioned snow but I couldn't get the idea of summer reads out of my head.
Mclean is not a character that I could really relate to. I've moved around a lot in my life but it was always my choice. I get the idea of starting over and kind of reinventing yourself, but not to such an intense degree. I didn't hate her by any means, and I loved seeing her journey throughout the novel but she wasn't a character I completely understood.
I love the parent/child dynamics in all of Dessen's novels. They're not all perfect, but sometimes from the main character looking at a friend's parents, things do seem perfect. It's that "grass is greener" mentality that always fascinates me. I love that in the case of Mclean and her parents, things are far from perfect, but everyone is doing the best that they can. Her parents may be a bit misguided but they are making what they feel are the best choices given the situation they have found themselves in.
The supporting characters. I cannot get enough of them. I convinced myself in the beginning that I was going to hate Opal just on principle. (She was too snarky in her opening lines). But she won me over. A redeeming quality in her novel is that even misfits have a place, that unexpected people form a family. I thought Deb was going to be annoying, but she has some of the best lines in the book. That girl loves her acronyms. She surprised me as much as she surprised the other characters. Nothing is what it seems in the world of Dessen.
Dave will definitely be added to my list of favorite Dessen boys. He's super smart, and kind of nerdy but full of surprises (and romantic gestures). They're the kind of boys that I'll say why can't my man be like that? (In my head of course.) The anticipation for THE MOMENT between Dave and Mclean will practically kill you, but it's so worth it.
I loved all the Easter Eggs. Dessen is infamous for putting subtle and not so subtle mentions and descriptions of previous characters/places in each book. It makes me smile every time. In this book I counted 4, but I may have missed some. It's a delightful little nugget that makes me wish and sometimes believe that this world she's created and all these wonderful characters really do exist.
