This was the most relaxing book I have ever read. It is truly just a man talking about how much he loves his semi wild garden.
My Wild Garden is an enchanting mix of memoir, nature writing, and gardening advice that draws readers into the author’s personal experience of nurturing a garden that flourishes alongside the wild. Shalev’s poetic writing and profound love for the natural world make this book a joy for anyone who appreciates nature, gardening, or simply great storytelling.
Shalev shares his insights on the pleasures and hurdles of gardening, interspersed with personal stories that vividly illustrate his bond with the land and the diverse plants he cares for. His humor and warmth create an inviting atmosphere, making readers feel as if they are enjoying a chat with a knowledgeable friend. The book is rich with practical advice and wisdom on fostering a garden that honors biodiversity, appealing to both beginners and experienced gardeners.
Although the writing is exquisite and engaging, some readers might desire more in-depth gardening techniques or a closer look at particular plants.
This book is a delightful and thought-provoking work that encourages us to appreciate the wild aspects of nature and discover beauty in its untamed forms.
Heerlijk boek voor wie van tuinieren houdt en en passant wil genieten van tal van uitweidingen over t Hebreeuws, geschiedenis, ultra-orthodoxe tuiniers, spaghetti met salie en zo nog wat vermakelijke verhalen.
started out really interesting but then some of the topics went too long, and in others, his voice, failed to capture me.

The most calming, reflective, beautiful book

For me, this was a sipping book, not a gulping one. Each chapter was a sweet taste of wild gardening, life, humor, language, history, family, and religion. His climate in Israel is similar to mine in the Sacramento Valley. We both have lemon and pomegranate trees, and I was delighted with his insights. This book with its lovely illustrations has earned a spot on my shelves.
My first act after finishing the book was to see what Shalev had to say about the current conflict, and I sadly realized he passed away in April of 2023. I hope his garden continues to flourish and his memory is cherished.
