I love Dotti. Otherwise, I think the novel went a little too slowly; a large portion of the novel was not about a battle, but rather, the gathering of allies, which would lead towards the battle. The final battle was far shorter than I had anticipated. (But it was still fun to read.)

It's a blast coming back to this series, which I loved so much as a kid. I'll eventually get to the rest of them, but I'll save it for a time when I really need it.

Lord Brocktree felt like comfort food, all of Jacques trademarks are here - vivid descriptions of food, all manner of woodland creatures uniting to defeat an evil force, funny songs and never shying away from some pretty brutal deaths.

Badgers are great, Salamandastron is still my favorite name for a fortress. A bit formulaic, but that's all part of it.

this really is my favorite Redwall book. hares are the best beasts. I want to be a hare of the long patrol.

It's very odd to read a Redwall book with no mention of Redwall in it. This was another book that was often simply laying around in my 5th grade classroom so many times I would pick it up and read little snippets of it (and then leave it laying somewhere random). The badgers are the mightiest of all the creatures in these books, and I always felt they automatically had an air of authority and respect about them. Salamandastron is a mighty and wonderful place and sometimes I wondered if Jacques would ever involve a plot point where the volcano became active once again, but thankfully he never did.

Most Redwall books have some unique aspect to them. They're not there to restructure how you think about stories or anything like that. They don't need to be. Usually, it's just a story about good guys fighting bad guys. That said, all of them tend to have one or two twists or tweaks to them that make them unique to the others. This one's unique quality is sheer historical weight, and it works beautifully. From the beginning, it's understood that the protagonist is one of the most important characters in the Redwall universe, probably second only to Martin the Warrior, and his presence in any scene is felt. The villain and his army are huge and menacing. The b-plot is high stakes and interesting enough especially for how it affects the mission of the a-plot. Add all this together with interesting strategy and good characters, and this book is a solid entry in the series.

This one always makes me cry at the end. Phenomenal job, Mr. Jacques.
