More supernatural than mystery. I thinking the ending was supposed to be a plot twist or creepy....but it did not do much except maybe setup a sequel.

Average. Quick read. I have two more Sherlock Holmes by the same author...if they were not such quick reads I would probably skip them, but I got them from the library so I will probably go ahead and give them a quick read.

Just goes to show that nothing is as good as the original.

Unread shelf project 2023: book 49.

Pure supernatural sensationalist fluff but still so fun to read even as I felt my brain rotting!

Usually I can forgive a lot because I have a weak spot for the paranormal, but....this was a tough one to swallow. Holmes' mannerisms and relationship with Watson felt "off", even when they weren't supposed to.

Also surprising because I enjoyed the author's other Holmes pastiche, 'The Scroll of the Dead'. Unfortunately, I'd recommend avid Sherlock Holmes fans pass on this one.

I'm not usually a fan of Sherlock and Holmes books but I picked this one up for a challenge read. It was actually pretty good. I'm going to try some others in The Further Adventures series. These books are written by several different authors with many seeming to be based on true crimes/events which is very intriguing.

Can't say I was a huge fan of this one. It really hits a lot of buttons - Holmes is acting weird, Watson can't remember anything from a vacation they took, Watson working to solve his own darn problems, possible occult/black magic - but I just didn't fall in love with it the way I thought I would. I read it one sitting, it was engaging, but it's not something I'd be rushing out to read again.

Davies is king. By far, he's my favorite writer that does the different Holmes cases, and I have never met one that I didn't like. For sure, when I think of Blackwood, I'll think of this case rather than the Ritchie movie that came out in 2009. Of course, I had Gatiss's Sherlock and John in mind for the whole case, then I also had Lord Blackwood in my head for Enoch. (For Arabella, I had Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix, but whatever.) This was a fun little tale that took me about an hour to read. I'd certainly buy this one for myself when I get the chance.
