America, the main character, continues to be quite annoying, and despite frequent assurances from the boy she has chosen, she continues to doubt him. My eye-rolling progressed to scoffing out loud (sometimes while I was listening at work). America kind of drove me nuts. And it might have been because I was listening on an audiobook and was somewhat distracted, but I didn’t understand how a huge conflict near the end of the book seemed to be resolved so easily. I don’t necessarily recommend these books, but if you want a quick read with teen romance, these would probably work for you.

Aaaaand the last bit of cheese!

Argh!!
I actually enjoyed the first two books of this series; it was really light and cheesy fluff and very cliché but entertaining nonetheless. Nothing really special about the story to me, but fun escapism and quick to read.

However, this one frustrated me, beware major spoilers ahead!

I feel like the last 100 pages were sooooo rushed... Everything just happened at once and nothing was ever really explained!!

Like, all the people dying weren't really addressed at all? I wasn't really convinced by the deaths or how sad they should have been. America should have been destroyed by her dad's sudden death but it felt like she got over it in two days. I didn't feel her sadness at all except when she read his letter.

And then the king and queen died and that just felt way too convenient because suddenly America didn't have anyone in her way for her plan to destroy the castes. So the fact that the king was a sexist and child-abusing asshole was never really resolved or taken care of except by killing him off. Too easy!!! Maxon didn't really seem that bothered that both his parents were dead and neither did America, even though she had gotten close to the queen.

And don't even get me started on Celeste. Girl gets shot in the head after three books and no one gives it a second thought. Same thing with Anne... Didn't anyone notice all the new guards coming in and the old ones never coming back anyway..?

Poor execution on a lot of useless deaths in my opinion. It's like the author realized she hadn't killed anyone throughout the trilogy and was almost at the end so she just killed five people at once just because a lot of series usually kill off characters at some point or another. Or just to add twists because there weren't very many of those throughout this series either.

If you wanted to write a rebel attack you should have done it earlier, not 50 pages from the ending!!

And what about the rebels? I feel like they still need to be ridden of and we barely know about them (both North and South) or how they were formed, who their members are... They just rush in and kill or steal and rush out. This could have been exploited a lot more.

And then Aspen suddenly forgets about America and makes out with Lucy out of nowhere.

Also, Elise is such a stereotype of Asians.

And did America ever fix her relationship with Kota?

And Maxon just forgives America for lying to him and totally trusts her again enough to marry her even though she barely explained the Aspen situation to him??? Not to mention that they fight all the time and America is wishy washy about every decision she makes so this country is going to hell!

Argh!!!! again.

Looking back, overall this series was just a bunch of stereotypical YA tropes: poor awkward pretty girl with a rebellious streak becomes the Chosen One, hello love triangle, dystopia with evil government secrets, killing off lots of characters... etc etc. Another wannabe Hunger Games.

But!! I was still entertained and would have been okay with it (although not blown away) if it weren't for the last 100 pages. I'm annoyed.

Primrose Everdeen walked so the finale of this book could RUN. What an absolute banger of an ending.

Painful. DNF//Skipped chapters to finish
