This is the debut novel that was made into a film. Set in Mexico during the 1910s - 1920s. Told in third-person often focusing on Tita's inner thoughts. It reads like folklore and is structured around monthly chapters, each beginning with a traditional Mexican recipe. The descriptions often focus on the textures, smells, and tastes of the food. The description of food was the best part of the novel.

Without giving spoilers, I am VERY UPSET upon finishing. I felt like the writing was excellent and the character were great, but the final chapter made me really mad. Still one of the best books I've read. But what the heck!

Romantic magic realism with a lot of crying, sensuous I think is the word.

Not happy with this book!!! What was with that ending!! Overall very unsatisfying, it had such potential to raise women up and be empowering and have a good moral and instead the author chose to go in the complete opposite direction. The recipes were nice. Magical realism is good too.
