I’ve obviously already read some of the stories prior to this book, but the book itself was so gorgeous that I just couldn’t leave it there alone in the bookshop, and once it was in my hands I decided I might as well read it.
Normally, when I read classics or older books I try not to judge too hard on things that I don’t agree on, and obviously this book is full of that. You know, religion and standards of beauty and sexism and all that.
I would have been fine with all that if I hadn’t been deeply annoyed by the writing style. I have no idea what it was, but gods, how I loathed most of it. It just dragged and dragged and subsequently I was annoyed, and so when things I don’t agree with happened I was even more annoyed.
So... I’m giving a three star rating. And let’s be honest, most of it is because the book is so dang pretty.

No rating because I honestly don’t know how I’d even begin to assess these stories like I would a normal book. It’s not news to anyone that fairytales are nuts, but I guess I thought Andersen’s would be slightly more sensible than the Grimm Brothers’ writing—I was wrong! The Tinder Box is the weirdest thing I’ve ever read, The Snow Queen is completely nonsensical, and The Princess and the Pea is only like four paragraphs?? Still, it’s nice to read these in as close to their original form as I can get! Also my edition has gorgeous illustrations from Mina Lima which is the same design firm that did a ton of production/prop design for the Harry Potter films, so that’s neat!
