As the sequel to The Atlas Six, I expected more world building, but it didn't expand too much about the mortal and magical society (other than Libby being in 1989/1990 in LA). The premise of the series and the Alexandrian Society is definitely an intriguing concept, but once you get into it, there is not much substance. I struggled to understand character motivations even when we got glimpses of their past. The biggest mystery is Atlas Blakely and I didn't understand his character motivations. He's depressed about the world and basically wants a team of people to create doorways to the multiverse? It was also difficult to understand certain character motivations and their necessity to the plot (Reina, Callum, Parisa) and I wished they were more fleshed out. I will say I enjoy reading the POVs of Nico, Libby, and Gideon!
I think one of the funniest plot points is Callum being drunk for 90% of the book and then suddenly having the solution to Libby's problem at the end of the book.
The way the chapters are aligned with different character POVs sets up a confusing narrative and timeline and I struggled to follow where I was in the story. It does feel convoluted in terms of the plot, but overall I still enjoy the series and want to see where it goes.

I was forced to listen to the book as I couldn’t find it in stock anywhere at a price I could afford and couldn’t get the text version from either of my Libby libraries without waiting 5 months. I got 80 pages in before each characters thoughts and feelings just stopped mattering. I realized as we sat in the same scene over a couple hours for 70-80 pages which was really still the same scene that the book started in, that I really just didn’t care anymore because I could tell that the book was just going to be internal dialogue after internal dialogue. The first book was fine with the amount that it had because we didn’t sit in the same scene for so long that it became monotonous but good god I was so ready to keep on with the cool stuff, the worldbuilding, the magic, not how much all the characters basically can’t stand each other and how everybody is pretty much beholden to the two characters who can read minds.

Extremely flat and uninteresting characters who have no arc or payoff. The storyline is all over the place. The author couldn't pick one problem to focus on at any given time, and none resolve in an interesting way, if at all. The writing feels amateur at best, with tons of side comments in parenthesis that are way too on the nose.
