An incredible inside of the real life of the italian naples mafia - camorra. There some intresting facts known only to the closes people sourrounding this criminals. A must read.
I just finished reading the book for one of my journalism classes this semester. Before we started, my professor explained us how Roberto Saviano's life has been threatened by the Camora, and finished by saying that it may not be for years, but he won't be surprised if one day he turns on the news and sees that Saviano has been killed. That's a chilling thought, but now that I've read the book I can understand why the Camora wants its author dead. Not only does Saviano paint a picture of their ruthless and violent lifestyles, but he does so in a way that includes names, places, and intimate details. It's a brave book, and an important one, and it is a sharp contrast to the glorified mafiosos of The Godfather that most of us (myself included) think of when we imagine the Italian mafia. This is not to say that there weren't and aren't gangsters in that tradition, but the Camoristas' style and unrelenting, mechanized violence is intense. Saviano's writing is full of imagery that captures both the harsh, blunt details of the violence everpresent in the region (one of the most powerful moments is the discussion of the best way to die—a shot to the head rather than a shot to the heart), as well as the minor details about the daily lives of those in the region, both in the criminal lifestyle and the bystanders who must witness and hopefully survive it.
Honestly should have probably just watched the movie or series.
Saggo che tratta di retroscena sconosiuti a molti. La mancanza di qualita' letteraria e di stile di scrittura, oltre a diversi paragrafi contenenti semplici e talvolta noiosi elenchi di nomi e fatti, ne complicano talvolta l'immediata comprensione e inficia sulla scorrevolezza.
“Gomorra” è un’opera estremamente particolare: un viaggio, come suggerisce il titolo, attraverso i soprusi, le violenze, i crimini, la presa di potere nei settori edilizio, tessile, di smaltimento dei rifiuti e del narcotraffico di una classe dirigente e di un “Sistema” che da decenni ormai dominano le regioni meridionali italiane ed in particolar modo la Campania, terra originaria dell’autore.
Ed è proprio a causa di questo attaccamento ed amore per la sua terra che Saviano scrive quello che non è solo un romanzo, ma anche e soprattutto un’appassionata indagine giornalistica. Un’indagine che si basa sull’osservazione, documentazione ed, infine, sulla riflessione di quanto visto; una denuncia mossa per far sì che l’egemonia e influenza dei clan, che ha da tempo raggiunto ogni angolo d’Italia e del globo, un giorno cessi di esistere. Un grande atto di coraggio che ha compromesso la libertà e l’incolumità dell’autore, ma che ha favorito la presa di coscienza di ciò che accade ogni giorno sotto gli occhi di tutti, italiani e non.
Un romanzo che, anche solo per questo motivo, merita di essere letto!

Despite being a book full of facts and with little dialogue, it doesnt get tiring, because the theme of the book and the events makes you read nonstop.
I REALLY suggest it is made a journal as it has many characters and places.
Also, there are several strong scenes.

My boyfriend encouraged me to read this one...he said "it's one of the best true crime novels EVER." I wouldn't go that far but it was interesting reading.
