So the lesson learned at the end of the day is that men aren’t worth saving! I hate Kay!

And yeah. Andersen was a weird dude.

After owning this ebook for 6 years I finally was inspired to read it! This was a queer retelling of a Finnish folktale, the snow queen. The style was extremely fairytale-esque, and the inner commentary of the main character was interesting and funny. Really liked the animal companions. Reminded me of Juliet Marillier!

Okay, don't read this if you don't want to know anything at all about the SFFBC Fantasy BOTM. I'll untag it after the group has had a few days.

A sweet, heart-filled book about a couple of plucky girls and their friends. I really enjoyed it. It was quick, endearing, and told a classic story from a slightly different perspective so that it felt fresh and interesting.

CONTENT WARNINGS: (just a list of topics)
Spoiler killing animals, body image and self loathing, harassment, self harm, cannibalism, gore

Things to love:

-The characters. Vernon/Kingfisher's wit and kindness shine through these characters--every single one is lovely and larger than life but in a very relatable way. I especially loved seeing all the old ladies.

-The subtle modern additions. People separating gender from sex, gender from lust, infatuation vs. love, the unhealthy fixation of teenaged girls...there were a lot of things in here that added a dimension to the retelling to give it that "feel" of a story meant to educate and entertain at the same time, like most fairy tales are intended. I enjoyed having that preserved.

-The humor. I mentioned it earlier, but I was laughing out loud at various points.

-Inclusion. I loved seeing the Saami and traders from other lands. It was a great way to keep the feel consistent but also remind (certain) folks that people of color weren't invented when Chris Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

-The magic. I loved the dreams and animals and reindeer road!

Things that left me wanting a bit more:

-The details. We really float by a lot of stuff I wanted to explore further.

-The ending. I feel that we've used this trick before (or since? I don't recall which book came first)? Again, a bit brief, a bit nebulous.

I very much enjoyed this story and aside from wanting to read more of it, I don't have real complaints! I just love her retellings. Highly recommended as a light but satisfying fairy tale.

A beautifully queer retelling of the Snow Queen! I loved it! It starts off right enough, Elsa and Kay are neighbours and best friends, but Kay has been weird since a kid and one night he leaves with the Snow Queen. Elsa of course resolves to find her best friend / love interest and sets out. Unfortunately she needs to deal with witches, bandits, talking ravens, and magical transformations along the way and is kinda delayed. I especially enjoyed the talking raven and the fascinating take on reindeers and life in the high north. A wondrous, wholesome, gripping tale full of magic, unexpected love and cool talking animals. Loved it.

Also there's a wombat on the front page! Love wombats!

This was super cute. Loved the f/f romance that I wouldn’t have expected from the summary, and the fantasy elements were super cool! I especially loved the reindeer parts.

I did find the writing a bit stilted at first, as the author uses very short sentences most of the time which makes it hard for a flow to get going, but I got used to it after awhile. The book didn’t wow me, but it was really good and I’m glad I read it.

Giving this one a 4.5 out of 5. Actually, I'd give it a 4.95 out of five.

Wonderful reimagining of the original work that doesn't stray too far from its predecessor's charms, but gives it much needed flair-magic and slight mischief, a great array of characters, humor.

My favorite part was- pretty much all of it! I have so many lines recorded that I love; Kingfisher's prose is beautiful. The only thing that may have felt short was the climax. A bit deus ex machina and "oh well I guess that happened" but honestly, with the rest of the book sitting right there, I don't mind. I'm probably thinking about how beautiful that scene was to conjure up in the first place.

Also, the sapphic romance! WLWOC and WLW rep without needed to Grimm-style kill a sapphic character off. It was pretty lovely and the story was not too invested in the romance to a fault. We love to see it.
