Andersen's fairy tale, with a twist
If you've read Hans Christian Andersen, you may have come across one with Kay, a boy, and Gerta, a girl. They're friends till Kay is kidnapped by the Winter Queen, and Gerta sets off to save him.
That's about when Ursula nudges the story off the expected, Andersenian rails.
(Mild spoilers.)
You get a talking Raven, a generous aging Reindeer, a robber girl, some loquacious otters, and... You just should read it. Seriously, Very Enjoyable.

I came across T. Kingfisher first as Ursala Vernon with the graphic story Digger. Then continued to further fall in love with her artwork and now her garden and life of an author journal pages.
When I heard her announce this book, it was an easy purchase. They story was impossible to stop reading. I loved every second. It's a wonderful retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen.
She gives such a wonderful voice to the creatures she writes about, and to the humans as well. She's a remarkable Hugo Award winning talent!

There is a beautiful sort of magic in fairytale retellings that still sound like fairytales, even when they've been expanded and (vastly) improved upon. I enjoyed this immensely, which was a real treat because The Snow Queen is not one of my favorite fairytales. But T. Kingfisher took everything I didn't like about the original and chucked it out a window, while still keeping the best elements.
But really, there are two things that make this book absolutely excellent. One is the sapphic romance. Since I went into this book cold, reading no reviews beforehand, it took me completely by surprised, and I loved it.
And two...Mousebones. There are very few animal companions out there I love more than this smarmy, wonderful raven.

Loved Kingfisher’s take on The Snow Queen.
Full Review:
I maybe cracked up that the theme of this book is not only, know your own worth, but men for the most part are not worth the trouble. I loved the character of Gerta, and was prepared to be frustrated with her, but loved that the book turned what I was expecting on it's head and we then have an unexpected, but welcomed romance.
The flow of the book though at times feels a bit wonky, but I liked it. I was glad to just read and meet all of the people/tribes that Gerta was meeting as she continued her quest to rescue her best friend/love Kay from the Snow Queen.
