This book made me cry. I didn't know how hungry I was for a retold fairytale with this particular spin (
Spoilerthat the heroine falls in love with a girl she meets along the way instead of the boy she had a crush on at the beginning of the story and is attempting to save
) until I found it. Kingfisher/Vernon is such a gifted storyteller - I want there to be a hundred Kingfisher novellas for me to devour, each one as shining a gem as the last.

I love the way Kingfisher wove the threads of the original Snow Queen story into something new and beautiful, making it her own. I love the otters, and the robber girl, and the reindeer, and the description of traveling the reindeer road, and the witch who tries to protect Gerta, and Mousebones (oh Mousebones!!), and Gerta's grandmother, and quite simply everything. It's a wonderful story told perfectly, and it instantly became one of my favorites.

Another modified tale from T Kingfisher, this time focused on the Snow Queen with light sapphic love. I found this not super engaging and it didn't hold my interest well, so I read it in little bits over the course of a week. It just didn't grab me and compell me to keep reading like most Kingfisher books do.

I did appreciate the animal familiars and the team of flying otters was delightful. The plot began with a boy being kidnapped and his neighbor, a girl with a deep love for him, journeys to find him. Along the way she realizes how unrealistic they love was, and grows to love another, instead of the boy who had often overlooked her.
