I never liked The Snow Queen as a kid. I didn't like Hans Christian Andersen in general even though I could see the appeal of dark/sad fairy tales when it came to the brothers Grimm or Oscar Wilde (it always somehow felt as though the Grimms and Wilde wanted to tell a story, whereas Andersen just wanted to make children cry).

Anyway, T. Kingfisher takes a tale I never liked by an author I hated and transforms it to a beautiful thing and that wasn't surprising in the slightest -she could take the bleakest story and transform it to something heartwarming, funny and all-round wonderful.

*Short Review: The Raven and the Reindeer by T. Kingfisher

Quotes: "No one wants true stories. They want stories with truth dusted over them like sugar on a bun."

"Many things are real," said Jenna. "It does not mean that all the tales told about them are."

Review: Sometimes it's the journey, not the destination. A grand and noble adventure that starts out simple enough. A girl is going to rescue you her friend and one she loves. But as the story unfolds, more characters join her in the adventure. And things change. Short, and quick read. A semi rushed ending, but satisfying. I'd rate this 3.75 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks for reading 📚

I loved this book so much. So freaking much. I don’t even have anything intelligent to say. This was perfect.

As a child I loved fairy tales. I remember my father reading them to us at bedtime. But the Snow Queen always was a story I felt was wrong. I had no sympathy for Kay and was sorry for the Queen's loneliness. So when I saw there was an f/f plot, I fully expected
Spoiler Gerta would end up with the Queen
. And I probably would have approved, because I have no doubt the author would have done that twist justice.
But the story I got was so much better! I felt that finally an author saw Kay the way I did as achild (and I had forgotten about my dislike until now). Both Gerta and Janna with their flaws, so utterly human. I loved Mousebone and the giant otters, but what really stayed with me were the dreams.
SpoilerEspecially the thornhedge dreams about the birds and the gifts given and received
.
This book will end up one of my favourites this year.

Kingfisher did a fabulous job of capturing the atmosphere of the original Andersen story, especially the eeriness of the Snow Queen and the wildness of the Little Robber Girl. A clever and lovely retelling, with some satisfying twists.
