Gerta starts out like any other female fairytale lead. Overly focused on a man in her life that offers nothing in return and timid. Her journey into self-assuredness is the true quest of this tale.  Kingfisher provides rich characterization of the animals and the humans Gerta meets along her quest. I also appreciated the inclusion and detail provided on the Sami indigenous peoples of the Nordic countries. This is a strong modern retelling.

Snow queen retelling with lesbians and skinwalkers! Classic Kingfisher fairytale feel with a slight darker twist (although this story is far from horror).
Quick read, lots of local (Finnish and Sami) mythology. Stays true to original for all important parts. Beautiful imagery.

The start of this almost made me give up on this which makes it all the more surprising that it turned out to be one of my favorite reads of the year so far. The characters and animals, folklore and gore and magic just worked so well together that it makes the first few chapters well worth it!
