A great queer, feminist retelling of The Snow Queen.
In had a great time with this one! I really like the way T Kingfisher captures the essence of a fairytale in her retellings. Like this story has been here all along, and just happens to have a better message and more modern values.
I loved the characters and found them really fun to follow. I loved the way the author subverted so many tropes we see in fairytales in such unique and fun ways. The way the relationship came about was lovely, the setting immersive and the plot easy to follow.
It is arguably not a stand out book enough to warrant "new favourite" status but it was a great time and I have no doubt I will revisit it some time.

A beautiful fairytale retelling of the Snow Queen with a strappy protagonist, magic and nature inherently intertwined, a gorgeous narrative voice with a fantastic sense of humor, and a compelling and believable f/f romance that, despite being not having any onscreen sex, is absolutely *sizzling*. I loved this book!
give me 50 million more Kingfisher books!!! and this one is GAY??? the squeal i squealpt when Greta and Janna began interacting??? wlw representation is so hard to find in good books, especially cozy fantasy books by your favorite author! this was just truly fantastic. 100% recommend literally everything this woman has ever and will ever write- it will not disappoint!
Really great. A well-written and frequently astonishing entry on the "adapt a classic fairy tale into a coming-of-age novel with modern sensibilities" genre. What sets it apart is successful humor, wisdom, and an underlying set of metaphors that I am still working on. There are some imperfections, but the whole is just a fantastic meal. I don’t want to adapt old fairytales—and maybe the ending lacked something?—but in all other ways this is precisely the sort of book I would like to write. Bravo.
