I love this author and her fierce, normal girls who do the hard things because they need to be done.
This was another fabulous story with a wonderful heroine and the matter of fact magic that is such a part of her writing.
I also love the snow queen story, and thoroughly enjoyed this retelling and exclusion of the motives and people behind the characters actions.

I’m not sure I could find a book better suited for this season ❄️ A snow queen, a sassy raven, a relatable & vulnerable main character on a mission to save her friend- and a surprisingly sweet romance, sprinkled with sparks of magic ✨

A very nice fleshed out version of the story of the snow queen. Greta is the center of the story and kingfisher does a great job making her sound like a real girl. I enjoyed reading about her development as she stubbornly travels to save her childhood friend and crush Kay, encountering new friends and helpful people along the way, and finding her own strengths
and new romance - was not expecting her falling for the robber girl Janna but wow I really enjoyed reading about Greta's bi awakening and her falling for Janna
. I liked how Kingfisher deftly wove in the more magical and fantastical elements to a world of normal working people, and how Greta interacted with them. The ending seemed a bit rushed but very satisfying.

And another wonderfully quirky and heartwarming retelling by T. Kingfisher joins my favourites. Kingfisher’s signature wit and charm shine through in this story, blending humour, adventure, and rich character development.

The main character, Gerta, is an endearing protagonist who balances the fantastical elements with grounded emotions. The romance is a sweet slow burn, and the world-building is as enchanting as it is vivid.

Overall, this book is a perfect mix of dark whimsy and light-hearted fun!

Gerta has been in love with her next door neighbour, Kay for her whole life, though Kay doesn’t seem to particularly care about her.
When the Snow Queen kidnaps Kay and Gerta witnesses the abduction, she sets out to rescue him, meeting interesting characters along the way.

What I love about T. Kingfisher is that she infuses humour into any book she writes and this book is no different.  I love Gerta and her determination.  The supporting characters made this book refreshing and so enjoyable.

Kingfisher kept true to the important beats of the story while making the story familiar and unique.
