(I read fairy tale retellings on the plane to and from Austin, and this was the perfect size for a flight read)
A (queerer) retelling of The Snow Queen!
It's been a few months, but the imagery of this book is still fresh in my mind-- the ice and the snow, the Snow Queen's weird little sleigh pulled by otters, the blood of the reindeer and the macabre crow companion and the taste of love-- aah, that's what fairy tales are made of.

For a book that’s only 200 pages it does take you on an epic journey to the very north. We get to meet some very exciting and strange characters, as well as some very magical places and some not quite magical but perhaps may not be what it seems places.
I love how the Gerta isn’t magical but experiences the highs and lows of magic, the way her relationship between characters changes and grows is amazing and I love her attitude throughout the book.
The snow queen was one of my favourites growing up and to see it told in this way warms my heart. It’s such a fun and cosy read with the perfect winter vibes.

This is somehow the second sapphic retelling of The Snow Queen that I've read this year (the other being Robbergirl by the lovely S.T. Gibson).
Really good read and goes in directions I didn't quite expect; it's the first I've read from T. Kingfisher and it absolutely won't be the last.

Fabulous story! I love the characters the author creates; people who are funny and fallible and full of real life anxieties. I'm so happy to have discovered T. Kingfisher at long last; I'm thrilled to be making my way through her catalog.

Highly recommend reading the original Snow Queen fairy tale this is based on before diving into the book. It's public domain and a quick read. The two stories share only the most basic of details but T. Kingfisher scattered so many fun little details and references to it throughout the book that you're really missing out if you can't catch them!
